The first of the post-season awards began today with the release of the AP sportswriters ALL-SEC picks. Cam Newton, to no one’s surprise, was a unanimous selection as the SEC Offensive Player of the Year. Nick Fairley was chosen as the SEC Defensive Player of the Year, while Auburn Head Coack Gene Chizik was named the SEC Coach of the Year. Joining Auburn on the first team ALL-SEC were Offensive Linemen Ryan Pugh and Lee Ziemba. South Carolina’s Marcus Lattimore was the unanimous choice for Freshman of the Year in the SEC.

This award came in after writing this piece. Auburn Offensive Coordinator Gus Malzahn has just been named the recipient of the Frank Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant. He accepted the award in Little Rock this afternoon. He becomes Auburn’s second winner of the award. Gene Chizik won the award as Auburn’s defensive coordinator in 2004.
Oregon has their first win in the Auburn-Oregon match-up, and hopefully last, with Oregon Head Coach Chip Kelly being named the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year over Auburn’s Gene Chizik. I guess taking a 10-3 team to a 12-0 record the following season is more impressive than taking an 8-5 team to a 13-0 record the following season. Chizik was named AFCA Region 2 Coach of the Year earlier in the day..
Coach of the yr wont be final until after dec 13th so where ever you got this info from is wrong. voting is still in progress.

proof to back up what i said.
Unheard of that LSU has zero offensive All SEC players but 3 All SEC Defensive players and All SEC PK while going 10-2 overall and a top 10 finish in the BCS. Only losses coming to Auburn and Arkansas, both BCS bowl bound teams. Hats off to the Mad Hatter for making this a great season regardless of having no offense. We won with Defense and Special Teams. Great job Tigers.
Where in the world is A.J. Green on this list
He was voted to the second team w/ Randall Cobb.
Here are both teams…

@ michael,
your link is for liberty mutual coach of the year award. i honestly think it should have been Chizik’s, but i am an Auburn fan and have a biased opinion. here is the USA today link announcing it.

How did Robert Lester not make the list? He was first in the SEC in INTs and was only one off the lead in the NCAA. Here are the links to show his stats.

What a difference of opinion the sports reporters and SEC coaches have! The Coaches Poll has Auburn with only four players on the first and second teams combined, while Alabama has twelve. How do you finish fourth in the West, and have 12 ALL-SEC players on your team? I do like the fact that the SEC coaches chose Nick Bell as honorary captain of the teams.
