Five Things You Need To Know: Arkansas vs Louisiana Monroe
Arkansas Razorbacks play UL-Monroe at 7pm Saturday in Little Rock. While few expect this game to be close, Arkansas needed 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to win in 2008. Here are five things you need to know before Saturday night’s game.
1 – Ryan Mallett is efficient: Mallett is widely considered the best quarterback in the SEC, and he proved that against Tennessee Tech last week. In last week’s victory, Mallett was 21 of 24 for 301 yards and 3 touchdowns. Mallett will use this week as another tuneup before beginning SEC play next week.
2 – Joe Adams:
If you don’t know the name Joe Adams, you do now. Adams is perhaps Arkansas best wide receivers and is quickly emerging as one of the SEC’s best. Adams was impressive in the season opener, catching 6 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns. The highlight was an 85 yard touchdown reception late in the second quarter. Look for Adams to have another big week against UL-M and become Arkansas’ go to wide receiver.
3 – First game of UL-M: This is the first game of the season for Louisiana Monroe, so we can expect a little bit of rust. The Warhawks are in the Sun Belt Conference, where they finished 6-6 last year (5-3 in conference play). UL-M is returning their starting quarterback, leading rusher, and top wide receiver from last year. Expect the Warhawks to contend in the Sun Belt, but not on Saturday
4 – Game is in Little Rock: Whenever Arkansas plays a team from Louisiana, they play them in Little Rock, Arkansas. I am not sure the reasoning for this, perhaps it is part of the Louisiana purchase, who knows? Arkansas also plays LSU this year at War Memorial Stadium.
5- Arkansas wins big: Arkansas should have no problem winning this game, the biggest question is how they will look. Arkansas next four games are against Georgia, Alabama, Texas A&M, and Auburn. One would assume that they have looked past UL-M, but will need this week to do some fine tuning. Their next three opponents all have very good defenses, so I expect Arkansas to really focus on their timing and running game this week.
