Best In 2010: Quarterback
The Quarterback position will be some what of an anomaly this year, as only four teams return their starter. Many young players will have an opportunity to make a major impact on their teams success for 2010. Here is a list of the top three heading into next year.
1 – Ryan Mallett (Arkansas): The clear #1 on our list, Mallett will be on every pre-season Heisman list and will battle Mark Ingram for SEC Offensive Player of the Year honors. Mallett threw for just over 3,600 yards last season, completed 55% of his passes, accounted for 30 touchdown passes, and only 7 interceptions. If Mallett can improve on last years numbers, look for Arkansas to make a run at a BCS at large bid.
2 – Greg McElroy (Alabama): McElroy is the Ben Roethlisberger of the SEC, minus the character issues. McElroy is asked to manage the game, be effective, and not turn the ball over. McElroy may never win you a game, like Mallett can, but he is extremely effective in what Alabama asks of him. His touchdown to interception ratio ranks up there with the best of the SEC, with 17 touchdowns to only 4 interceptions.
3 – John Brantley (Florida): Brantley, a former Gatorade National Player of the Year, will be given the reigns to the Florida offense this year. His numbers from last year, 410 yards 7 touchdowns and 0 interceptions, aren’t overly impressive considering he mostly entered the game in mop up duty. However, Brantley has been receiving rave reviews for his accuracy, arm strength, and leadership since taking over in the Spring. Don’t be surprised if Brantley puts up impressive numbers and enters 2011 as a Heisman trophy favorite.
Sleeper Pick – Aaron Murray (Georgia): Aaron Murray reminds me a lot of Drew Brees. He is listed at just over 6′, known for his pinpoint accuracy, and the kid is just a flat out winner. Murray threw for over 4,ooo yards, 51 touchdowns, and only 7 interceptions his junior year of high school. He also rushed for over 900 yards and 12 touchdowns that year, while breaking the previous Florida state records set by Tim Tebow. Murray will be part of an exciting crop of young talented quarterbacks starting this year in the SEC.

[...] The reason for all the excitement? The most talented quarterback to hit Fayetteville since Quinn Grovey. Heck, many will argue that Ryan Mallett is THE most talented quarterback to ever play on the hill… And they could be right. To say that the 6’7″ Mallett has the prototypical quarterback build is like saying that water is wet. Thanks to his height, Mallett has phenomenal field vision. Couple that with the rocket launcher he calls a right arm and it’s no wonder he is very much in the Heisman Trophy discussion and easily the best quarterback in the SEC. [...]
