Best of 2010: Special Teams
Three phases to success in college football, offense, defense, and special teams. Special teams, use to be filled with walk-ons and 5th year seniors as a way to reward them for their hard work and dedication. Teams that block a punt, have a win percentage of over 90%. Look for many of the SEC best players to get time on special teams, perhaps no other conference in the country puts as much emphasis on special teams as the SEC.
1 – Georgia: Georgia has the nations best kickers in punter Drew Butler and kicker Blair Walsh. Brandon Boykin will handle the kickoff return duties, after handling them last year. Look for AJ Green to get first shot at returning punts for the Bulldogs. Green is the best wide receiver in the SEC, and any attempt to increase his touches will only help Georgia.
2 – Florida: Florida has an All-American candidate in punter Chas Henry, and Caleb Sturgis has one of the strongest legs in the country. Look for Chris Rainey to get a shot at returning punts and kickoffs for the Gators. Rainey will do his best to replace Brandon James, one of the nations most successful return men. Florida led the SEC in blocked kicks last year, and Urban Meyer will continue to place high emphasis on his special teams.
3 – Auburn: Auburn returns kicker Wes Byrum, who will challenge Blair Walsh for the SEC best kicker. Ryan Shoemaker will take over punter duties and try to regain his freshman year form when he earned all-sec honors. Auburn will have to replace their holder after Clayton Crofoot graduated. Desmond Washington will handle the return duties for the Tigers.
