The Dan Mullen to Miami talks are heating up. With Jon Gruden all but telling Miami to pound sand, the Hurricanes will have to move on to their next candidate in the list of coaches. I’m not for certain, but Dan Mullen has to be second on the list and is followed by Randy Edsall from Connecticut, Tommy Tuberville and others. Mike Leach isn’t really even in consideration.
Let me just say this, if you’re Dan Mullen and you want to win championships, take the Miami job. He’s won eight games in Starkville this year and has done a fabulous job there for two years. I hope I don’t offend any State fans, but in a league where there is Alabama, LSU and now Auburn and Arkansas getting right, not to mention when Florida, Georgia and Tennessee are right, the Bulldogs’ chances of winning a championship are very, very stacked against them. However, I have heard Dan Mullen, and his family also, is very happy and satisfied in Starkville, but if he wants to win championships he has to take the Miami job. Mullen has entergized the State fan base this season to maybe an all-time high. He is a fabulous coach.
I hope the SEC doesn’t lose him as a coach, but let’s face it, all of us knew he would not stay at Mississippi State a long time. He has had success this year and will be a very successful coach moving forward whether he stays at State or takes another job.

Dan Mullet has brought a new energy to Starkville, and has had success on the field and in the recruiting area. However, even he knows the dynamics of this league. If he can’t take Mississippi State to a championship, his crown will start to tarnish, recruiting will get harder for him and his staff, and teams in the conference will start dominating the Dawgs again. Once this happens, it won’t be as easy to find a head coaching position like Miami. A successful coach at a stepping stone school understands he has a limited window of opportunity.
Question: If Dan Mullen goes to Miami, does Gus Malzahn go to Miss St? Coaching carousel.
Gus Malzahn has stated that he would be interested in being a head coach in the future, but that he is in no hurry. I think Malzahn will wait for a better job offer than one at Mississippi State.
