LSU v. UNC – UNC has a great deal of hype surrounding their program going into the 2010 season. They have a number of players on the defensive side of the ball who have NFL potential. With 5 players estimated by ESPN’s Mel Kiper to be the best at his respective position (including 4 as THE best), UNC brings an SEC-like defense to the ACC.

On the LSU side, Les Miles is potentially on the hot seat, and the Tigers will have to improve their offense this year. Going against the tough UNC defense, this might be a tough match-up. LSU needs to win this game more than UNC does. If LSU loses, look for the talk surrounding Les Miles’ job security to startup immediately. If UNC loses, frankly, it’s business as usual for UNC football. If UNC brings home a victory, it’s a big win for them.

Alabama v. Penn State – Penn State lost most of their big games last year and I think this will continue at Alabama. With the game in Tuscaloosa, I just don’t see Penn State having enough to compete. The multi-year Big Ten smack down courtesy of the SEC continues as the Roll Tide roll.

While not an SEC game, the next game has the potential to affect a one-loss SEC champion from getting into the National Championship game.

Boise St v. Virginia Tech – This is a huge game for Boise St. With their pre-season top 5 ranking (almost a given), if Boise St. can get by Virginia Tech, they only have one other tough matchup (Oregon St) later in the season. Other than that, they will likely roll in the WAC. Wins against Va. Tech and Oregon St. will not only ensure a BCS bowl for Boise St. but potentially a BCS championship game appearance. Yes, I know this is ridiculous.
