Evaluating Jeff Driskel
Edgewater High vs. Hagerty High was cancelled due to lightening and thunderstorms in the area a little bit into the third quarter. The Saturday Down South crew got to see a Hagerty team that was handled by the larger 6A school in Edgewater for the first half.
This was the first time we would get to see Driskel in action. He is physically imposing upon first impression. He has great footwork from the pocket and really has a pocket presence. What really stuck out is he has a quick release and is very accurate with his out routes to the sidelines. He can get the ball into the flat quickly and into the hands of play makers in space and that is what Urban Meyer’s offense revolves around. Several times in the first half he threw a great ball to the right man, but was dropped by the Hagerty wide receivers.
It was rather tough to be an accurate judge of his abilities though because Hagerty struggled mightily against a bigger and more athletic team. We came away impressed and his abilities will really start to show once he gets decent talent around him that can help. Until then, he will have to shoulder the load of carrying his team through this season.

Seriously? Watching this game on TV made me realize Driskel is overrated. The honestly? This article single handedly has made me realize how bad politics plays into these things. Driskel played horrible! Not saying he is a bad player but seriously he played terrible. Let’s break down some throws. The interception at the absolute worst time. Granted I saw two passes that were iffy on the drop section but they were both to the same receiver. I saw a for sure fumble that he was given immunity too. He had a couple nice passes to his pop warner friend. Jeff is a good player but trying to say he played well in that game is rediculous.
I am not sure he played horrible as you say. He was facing a much bigger and better team, and has very little talent around him. It is very difficult to judge a kid off one half of football. Physically he passes the “eye test”, he has a college QB body already. He throws a very tight spiral, has a quick release, and is pretty accurate. On his interception the wide receiver ran the wrong route, the WR got chewed out by the coaching staff after the play. Probably did not see that on tv.
Actually, the article does not say he played well. It says SDS came away impressed by his physical abilities and the ability to get the ball out of the pocket quickly. It was a horrible game. He played bad, but you have to take into consideration the talent around him and the school he was playing against. The kid will tell be a pretty good player at the next level.
[...] presence, has a quick release, and good accuracy throwing short routes. SDS recently took a trip to watch Jeff Driskel play at Edgewater High School. Driskel’s team struggled and it is definitely hard to be an accurate [...]
