With the news of Urban Meyer stepping down at the University of Florida, question is, who do they target?
Here is a list of coaches Saturday Down South thinks Florida will target to be their next head coach:
- Dan Mullen
- Bob Stoops
- Chris Petersen
- Chip Kelly
- Jon Gruden
- Bobby Petrino
There is probably more on the list, but this is a quick summation of possible targets for the Gators.

I agree 100%. Give him at least two years to turn the program around.
I think Bob Stoops would be the natural choice. He’s coached at Florida under Spurrier, and has proven himself on the national stage. It would take more to get him to leave Oklahoma, but with the Big XII, soon to be Big X seeming to fall apart, this would be a golden opportunity for Stoops, not to mention the fertile recruiting ground of Florida.

they may target mullen but they can’t get him. He was already there as the offensive coordinator, but you never know i might be wrong. I personally think they will try and get bob stoops
Biggest job to open up so far this year. It will be interesting to see what the chain reaction is through the coaching ranks. Miami and UF going through coaching changes means FSU, and SEC teams should do well in the state this year.
I’d say that depends on who they hire, and how soon. If Florida gets a big name coach, I wouldn’t expect recruitment in the state to suffer a setback.
It better be Mullen! Our offense hasn’t been the same since he left!
Mullen’s would top Strong just based hon what he has done at MSU and UF seems to target coaches with offensive backgrounds. The last defensive coach UF hired did not workout well.
Chip Kelly’s fast paced offense and defense with an SEC team could be lethal.
Just when you think that things in the SEC is starting to quiet down, Urban Meyer resigns. Charlie Strong could get some consideration along with Bob Stoops, Dan Mullen, Gus Malzahn, Chip Kelly and Chris Petersen. My gut feeling thinks it will between Mullen and Malzahn with Petersen as a dark horse.
Again? I’ve got $25 that says they go after Malzahn.
Florida is a top program nationally. I don’t see them going after an assistant coach. They’ll go after a proven head coach. My guess would be either Bob Stoops or Dan Mullen.

miss state is now about to make mullen their highest paid coach ever after this news broke…. kelly has it made at oregon….. my guess is they go after malzhan
Will people please stop putting John Gruden on such a pedestal. Yes he won a superbowl with Dungy’s Defense and Warren Sap. Gruden is over rated and could not stand a winter in the SEC. Florida needs to pull Mullen or Stoops back in.
My wish list includes the following: Bob Stoops, Charlie Strong, Dan Mullen, Mike Shanahan & Jon Gruden. Not in any order of preference. Shanahan, Stoops, Strong and Mullen are all previous UF Assistants. Expect it to be a big name in order to salvage recruiting. I really like Charlie Strong but don’t know if one year at Louisville would be enough of a resume’ other than the years at Florida. Mullen would be more desired by Gator fans due to the lack of offensive output since he left.
Just to throw some more names into the ring for discussion… What about Bobby Petrino? Jim Harbaugh? Gary Patterson? Greg Schiano? Charlie Strong? Butch Jones? Kyle Whittingham?
