As of Monday morning, the reports were that Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma State leaving the Big 12 was “imminent.” Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe put together an 11th hour plan that would keep all remaining Big 12 teams intact. Reports are now saying that Texas is leaning towards staying, and the conference could be saved. Evidently, Texas, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M will make around $20 million per year, with other schools getting between $14-17 million per year.
In the current SEC TV contract, each school receives just over $17 million per year. The Big 10 has a slightly better deal, earning each team around $22 million per year. No school has other teams in the conference earning more than the other. Except the Big 12′s proposed deal, so how is Texas A&M on the same payment level as Oklahoma and Texas? Easy, they were in talks to join the SEC. Beebe could not have offered Texas A&M a deal paying them less than what they would make in the SEC, at least not with a straight face. Beebe decided he would do whatever it took to keep the SEC out of Texas, even if it meant throwing an extra six million dollars a year at Texas A&M.
How does Oklahoma St, Texas Tech, and others try and keep up with schools bringing in $6 million more per year than them?
