Mark Richt graduated from the University of Miami in 1982. He played there with former UGA Defensive Coordinator Willie Martinez. He also graduated from nearby Boca Raton, Fl high school. After the Hurricanes fired Head Coach Randy Shannon, Richt’s name came up first in the possible replacement conversation.
The UGA head coach is the current Dean of SEC Coaches having completed his 10th year at the helm. Considering Georgia has had only three Head coaches since 1988, it seems likely Richt will remain in Athens.
“Georgia is my home” he said when asked about possible other head coaching options. His brother-in-law former NFL QB Brad Johnson owns a house in the Athens area as well.
Others mentioned in the search were Texas Tech’s Tommy Tubberville, former Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach and Oklahoma Defensive Coordinator Brent Venables.
He is scheduled to receive $2.8 million next year.

I fear that Mark Richt will leave UGA for the Miami job. Then Georgia will grab Derek Dooley. The VOLS would be looking for their 2nd head coach in 2 years! YIKES! Is Fulmer still available?
Richt is not leaving…but if he does.. I would rather see Kirby Smart from Alabama. Played at UGA and has been under Sabans wing the last few years. I would think Dooley would not want to be in his Daddys shadow at UGA.
I do want to see Richt pound pavement. Preferably Highway 316 leaving out of Athens.
I think we could do worse than Kirby Smart.
After a 6 and 6 season, someone MUST go!
Richt is not leaving nor do I want to see him leave…………however, in the event that he does……The first person that I would go after would be Jon Gruden.
My first choice would be Bosie State’s Chris Petersen…if he can do what he does with 2-3 star athletes, imagine what he can do with UGA recruits.
I’m not sold on Kirby Smart, how much is the Defense run by Nick Satan?
Okay, call me callous, hard-hearted, cold, or whatever else — but Richt needs to go.
We had AMAZING talent at UGA this year and where did we end the season? 6 and 6? AWFUL!
His coaching is lackluster. His lack of ability to show ANY emotion on the sideline (except for the field rush back in 2007 against Florida) just underscores what is missing in the Dawg Program — PASSION TO WIN.
We need a coach who is not only a great mentor, but WANTS TO WIN — cleanly of course.
Mark Richt is not leaving Georgia, he said that he wanted to finish his career at Georgia. And he is not the only coach on the sidelines. And Virginia Coach Richt is the only coach in history to go 8 & 3 or better for 9 yrs in a row, but I guess you were happy with him then. Now he has one bad season & your ready to get rid of him, you suck!!!!
