How does Auburn get punished for what a group of former Mississippi State players and Cecil newton were scheming, before Cam Newton ever even signed a Letter Of Intent to play football at Auburn? Everyone is always talking about Auburn getting probation, or the death penalty or vacating all of their wins. I’d like to hear just one logical explanation for how Auburn would end up the fall guy in this. What else is out there that Auburn, the SEC, the NCAA and FBI were unable to find? I know it’s great to keep the rumors out there during recruiting, but even the NCAA has accepted that the facts are that there was a deal between three former Mississippi State players and Cecil Newton. They have issued the statement that Cam Newton was never ineligible to play at Auburn University, so I really don’t know what it’s going to take for you people to stop spreading unfounded rumor and innuendo.

BTW, if there is a pandora’s box, it is the Cam situation. All you have to say now is my Dad did it and, I did not know.

Believe me, I think Cam is one of the best players I have ever seen, but I hate the fact that all the rumors swirling taints whatever happens in the National Championship. I want another SEC team to win, because that makes the SEC look better. I just can’t stand greed screwing up a great sport, and no matter what happens to Auburn, the Newtons will be richer than they have ever imagined. Thats why I said earlier the player has to be punished, because of this: What if (and its a big what if) something does come out. Auburn gets punished, and nothing ever really happens to the Newtons. (and right now I have no idea how to punish someone down the road. ex. Reggie Bush)

The infraction here was between Cecil Newton and Mississippi State. If you start punishing people or schools who were not a party to the infraction, you open a huge Pandora’s Box. If you were to want to make sure that certain recruits weren’t eligible, after they had committed to other schools, you could have someone make a close family member an offer, or buy them a fancy meal somewhere while you discussed their recruitment. Bingo!!! You report your contact and extra benefit to the NCAA, and that athlete is ineligible, even though neither he nor the school he committed to, knew anything about what you or that family member was doing. This is the reason the NCAA doesn’t want to touch this rule, because they know the abuses that can arise on the other side of the rule. This is also the reason that the only school that Cam Newton became ineligible at was Mississippi State. I would only agree with removing a recruit’s eligibility if there was evidence that he knew what was going on.

Rick, don’t play high and mighty when you’re a fan of the Tide. Alabama is on their third NCAA probation of the past decade for major rules infractions, AKA cheating. The investigation didn’t even involve anything that Auburn or Cam Newton did, or knew about. This is from the NCAA website: “…Case precedent, NCAA or otherwise, extends only as far as its facts. And here, the facts are that no money changed hands, the student-athlete did not know about the activity, and the student-athlete did not enroll at the institution where the solicitation occurred… …It’s important to note that a violation was committed and it did impact Newton’s eligibility. It just did not impact his eligibility as much as some wanted.”

FWIW, the last infractions that Auburn’s football team has been on probation for, occurred in the Pat Dye era.

Well I’m a hog fan (wps) and I know that had Ryan Mallett’s dad pulled that stunt he wouldn’t be playing. Had Ryan Mallett used some autographed memorabilia to get tattoos, he’d be missing the Sugar bowl. But that’s just life I guess. Arkansas always gets the shaft and no respect along with it.
