Tide’s Dareus Suspended
Marcell Dareus, Alabama’s top returning defensive lineman, was suspended for the first two games of the season this morning for accepting improper benefits. Dareus also must pay $1,787, the amount of benefits he received, to a charity of his choice. The improper benefits were part of two separate trips down to Miami in which an agent payed for his airfare, lodging, food, and expenses. Coach Nick Saban said that Alabama will appeal the suspension, and try to get it reduced down to one game. Alabama opens Saturday at home again San Jose St, but host Penn St in week 2. Mike Ward, associate athletic director for compliance issued the following statement.
“It is important to note that Marcell never intentionally violated any NCAA rules and did not knowingly receive any benefits from an agent, Marcell lived up to the letter and spirit of the NCAA cooperative principle and the NCAA described him as one of the most truthful student-athletes we have ever interviewed.”
