Tommy Tuberville On The SEC & Big 12′s Future
The conference realignment talk that was going to change everything just a mere weeks ago ended when Texas got a sweet deal to remain in the Big 12 by basically making more money than their in-conference peers. Tuberville’s quotes hint at much of what we mentioned following the announcement that kept the Big 12 in tact – and that is, the disparity in revenues between Big 12 programs will likely cause divisions and potentially be the catalyst in bringing down the conference in the not-too-distant future.
From his interview with Rivals.com:
“I don’t think this conference will last long because there is too much disparity between all the teams. In the SEC, for instance, Vanderbilt makes as much money in the television contract as Florida. Everybody is good with it. Everybody is on the same page. Everyone gets the same votes.”
Tuberville goes on to take a few shots at Big 12 leadership, saying:
“Being here for six months, I’ve just kind of noticed there’s just not a lot of camaraderie in this league like you have in the SEC. … It starts with the commissioner. And I think [SEC commissioner] Mike Slive has done a good job. [Former SEC commissioner] Roy Kramer did a good job of building a base where everybody was on the same page. And that just has not happened here in the Big 12. It’s just a matter of time, to be honest with you, unless they get everybody on the same page.”
The over/under on the Big 12 disintegrating is summer 2011. Place your bets.
