The Florida Gators will square off against Penn State in the Outback Bowl come New Years Day. In looking ahead to this matchup, the more intriguing aspect of it is arguably between the two coaches who will be leading these two teams that day.
Joe Paterno is 83 and will be coaching Penn State. Urban Meyer is 46 and will be coaching Florida. For one of these coaches, the game has become too much with regards to health and to the daily demands. It’s not the 83-year old.
Joe Pa is on cruise control as coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions. The problem is that and by cruise control I don’t mean young guy driving 80 down the interstate, I’m more referring to the old guy driving a huge Lincoln Towncar with his head barely above the wheel going 25 in a 55 with his left blinker on for the last ten minutes.
Need evidence? Here’s the transcript from his recent interview with a Tampa radio station:
“You’ve gotta speak up, there’s a lot of people around here.”
Host: What I was saying was you sat in my living room recruiting my brother a long time ago.
“I can’t hear a word you’re saying. Hang on just a second.” To someone nearby: “Hey, see if you can get it, I can’t.”
Nearby person: “Are you there?”
Host: I’m here.
Nearby person: “OK, is there any way you could speak up?”
Host: I’m screaming into the microphone as it is now and he’s live on the air, so I’m yelling at the top of my lungs. I don’t know if the noise is too much there that he can’t hear me?
Nearby person: “No, we’re in a pretty quiet area. Do you want to try again?”
(Host, screaming): I can hear you great and I don’t know, can you hear me?
Paterno: “Talk up.”
Host: I’m screaming at the top of my lungs. I can’t talk any louder than this
“I’ll tell you, I’m having trouble hearing you.”
