Week 1 By Conference – Who Came Out On Top?

The following shows the major conferences and I personally categorize the wins and losses and assign points based on what I deem to be good wins, average wins and losses. This is subjective and not scientific.

The Big 12 (11-1 in week 1)

  • Good wins: Kansas St over UCLA (31-22); Texas A&M over Stephen F. Austin (48-7); Oklahoma St. over Washington St. (65-17); Nebraska over W Kentucky (49-10); Colorado over Colorado St. (24-3); Missouri over Illinois (23-13); Points: 12 points for 6 wins
  • Average/Mediocre wins: Iowa St over N. Illinois (27-10); Texas over Rice (34-17); Oklahoma over Utah St. (31-24); Baylor over Sam Houston St. (34-3); Texas Tech over SMU (35-27) Points: 5 points for 5 wins
  • Losses: North Dakota St over Kansas (6-3) Points: -3 points for the loss plus only scoring 3 points

Total points for the Big 12: 14 points

The Big Ten (9-2 in week 1)

  • Good wins: Michigan over UConn (30-10); Iowa over E Illinois (37-7); Northwestern over Vanderbilt (23-21); Michigan St over W Michigan (38-14); Ohio St. over Marshall (45-7); Points: 10 points for 5 wins
  • Average/Medicore wins: Penn St over Youngstown St (44-14); Wisconsin over UNLV (41-21); Minnesota over Middle Tenn St. (24-17); Indiana over Towson (51-17); Points: 4 points for 4 wins
  • Losses: Illinois lost to Missouri (23-13); Purdue lost to Notre Dame (23-12); Points -4 for 2 losses

Total points for the Big Ten: 10 points

SEC (10-2 in week 1)

  • Good wins: South Carolina over SMU (41-13); Tennessee over UT-Martin (50-0); Georgia over UL-Lafayette (55-7); Miss St over Memphis (49-7); Arkansas over Tenn Tech (44-3); Alabama over San Jose St (48-3); Kentucky over Louisville (23-16); Points: 14 points for 7 wins
  • Average/Mediocre wins: LSU over UNC (30-24); Florida over Miami OH (34-12); Auburn over Ark St (52-26); Points: 3 points for 3 wins
  • Losses: Ole Miss lost to JSU (49-48); Vanderbilt lost to Northwestern (23-21); Points: -6 for 2 losses (extra -2 for losing to JSU)

Total points for the SEC: 11 points

ACC (10-2 in week 1)

  • Good wins: Miami over FAMU (45-0); NC State over W Carolina (48-7) FSU over Samford (59-6); Wake Forest over Presbyterian (53-13); Georgia Tech over S Carolina St (41-10); Points: 8 points for 4 wins
  • Average/Mediocre wins: Clemson over North Texas (35-10); Duke over Elon (41-27); Virginia over Richmond (34-13); Boston College over Weber St. (38-20); Maryland over Navy (17-14) Points: 5 points for 5 wins
  • Losses: UNC lost to LSU (30-24); Boise State over Virginia Tech (33-30); Points: -4 points for 2 losses

Total points for the ACC: 9 points

The Big East (4-4 in week 1)

  • Good wins: Rutgers over Norfolk St (31-0); WV over Coastal Carolina (31-0) USF over Stony Brook (59-14); Points: 6 points for 3 wins
  • Average/Medicore wins: Syracuse over Akron (29-3); Points: 1 points for 1 wins
  • Losses: Pittsburgh lost to Utah (27-24); UConn lost to Michigan (30-10); Cincinnati lost to Fresno St (28-24); Louisville lost to Kentucky (23-16); Points -8 for 4 losses

Total points for the Big East: -1 points

Pac-10 (6-4 in week 1)

  • Good wins: Arizona over Toledo (41-2); Cal over UC Davis (52-3); Arizona St over Portland St (54-9); Oregon St over New Mexico (72-0); Stanford over Sacramento St (52-17); Points: 10 points for 5 wins
  • Average/Mediocre wins: USC over Hawaii (49-36); Points: 1 point for 1 win
  • Losses: Washington lost to BYU (23-17); Oregon St lost to TCU (30-21); Washington St lost to Oklahoma St (65-17); UCLA lost to Kansas St (31-22); Points: -8 for 4 losses

Total points for the Pac-10: 3 points

Summary

According to the numbers listed above, the conferences can be ranked in the following order:

  1. Big 12: 14 points
  2. SEC: 11 points
  3. Big Ten: 10 points
  4. ACC: 9 points
  5. Pac-10: 3 points
  6. The Big Least: -1 points
