NEW: Discuss this topic in the Google+ community for SEC fans.

As I continue my multi-year crusade now against Boise State and their fans desire to get into the BCS, I have two more bits of information to propagate towards the college football conversation.
You see Boise State is approaching their huge, BCS-implication matchup against the Nevada Wolfpack. If you recall, Nevada kept Boise out of the BCS last year when the Boise kicker all of a sudden went nuts and couldn’t make a chip shot. Boise gets their chance at revenge, and if you pay attention, you will hear the fans already laying the ground work for the argument that this game is another reason why Boise should get into the big dance.
There’s just one problem. Boise is a 27.5 point favorite over Nevada.
Is this a joke?
Let’s compare the October schedules of Boise State with a few teams in the SEC:
- Boise State: Nevada, Fresno State, Colorado State, Air Force
- Florida: Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Georgia
- Auburn: South Carolina, Arkansas, Florida, LSU
- Tennessee: Buffalo, Georgia, LSU, Alabama, South Carolina
So there you have it. Several more reasons why Boise State should be doing anything but playing for a national championship come January.
One last thing. Yes, I know Boise beat the crap out of Georgia. I was there. It doesn’t change my opinion on Boise and a shot at a national championship.

My thing is that this has been going on for years. Why haven’t they tried to join the Big 12 or something? Or even schedule a difficult OOC schedule since their in conference schedule is so weak? If you aren’t going to make the effort, why should you be taken seriously? Playing a weak Georgia team and taking a week off afterward isn’t that impressive.
Boise facts since 2002:
1. 12 total losses with 7 coming in two seasons (2005, 2007). They have finished undefeated twice and with a single loss in 5 other years.
2. During that stretch, they have 2 wins over BYU, 2 wins over TCU, 3 wins over Oregon St, 2 wins over Utah, one win over OK, 2 wins over Oregon, 1 win over VT and a thumping of UGA. They did lose to UGA in 2005, so their record against Georgia, OK, Oregon and VT in that period is 5-1, i believe. If you throw TCU into the mix, their record goes to 7-2. Lost to TCU by 1 in 2008, still 2-1 against them.
3. 8 AP all-Americans since 2004.
4. 19 active players in the NFL. More than AR, UK, Miss St, Vandy. Not far behind AL’s 23.
5. In the next few years, they pick up OOC teams like Michigan, Washington, BYU and maybe Ole Miss.
These are the facts. They have played very well against the “Big Boys” when they have played them and they are putting kids in the NFL. One problem they have with OOC is that they cant get teams to play them. So wait til Jan and watch what they do again this year against the big boys and then start this ridiculous debate all over. All they do is win the vast majority of their games no matter who they play.
There are two problems with your argument. First, you had to look over a long period of time to make the stats look good. Second, which is tied to the first, there is more to it than playing one or two good teams a year and winning. Real BCS contenders should have to prove themselves more than a couple of times a year. What did Boise State do this year after playing Georgia? They had to take a week off. There are just too many teams that have to go through so much more during the season. They prove themselves far more than the Broncos. So, even if Boise is the best team out there, I still say they don’t deserve a BCS bowl. They should have to work for it.
Ridiculous.
Nobody is saying they can’t compete with the “big boys” in a 1-game scenario. We’re saying if they had to play an SEC schedule, we wouldn’t be having this discussion.
more BSU facts: 0-2 vs Arkansas (2000, 2002) and were outscored a combined 79-45. In 2000 Arkansas was a 6-6 team and 2002 they ended up 9-5.
How would beating unranked 1-2 Nevada carry any BCS implications? Nevada is 84th in passing, 90th in points scored, and 117th in points allowed. They are 7th in rushing yards, but where has that gotten them? The BS Broncos are a joke. They ought to be kept out of the BCS until they figure out how to cure that fungus that’s turned their field a abominable shade of blue.
How long do you think it will be before the Noisy State fans find this article and start howling?
Boise hate is fun. The smurfs will be here soon enough to talk trash to UGA fans and anybody else who cares to listen.
When they play a real SEC team, instead of its inbred cousin(UGA). Then we can say Boise State is worth a BCS title chance. Until it faces Bama, Auburn, Florida, or teams the actually matter, then we can give em a shot. I’m impressed with the advancement of their program, but they’re not ready.
Drad – Are your anti-Georgia comments necessary when the real discussion is about BSU? Boise State did beat us this year, and I agree they were the better team. We are one of the few major conference teams who have played them and actually beat them, though. I was present for the game in 2005. Auburn has had a great past few years, but its rivalry with UGA is very evenly-matched. In fact, the only SEC team that can claim recent domination over UGA is UF. UGA will go 10-2, or at least 9-3, this season. Our two losses were to #5 and #12. Seriously…can you say the same? Before you call UGA inbreds of the SEC, consider that we very likely will defeat both Auburn and UF this year…with our young sophmore QB, a new offensive line, and true freshmen at running back and wide receiver. Back to the topic, I agree that Boise State is not ready. Alabama and LSU are much stronger teams, and even with one loss should play in the BCS championship before BSU.
Very likely beat Florida? Seriously? You guys couldn’t keep Aaron Murray upright against Boise’s pass rush and you think you can handle Florida’s ferocious front 4? Umm what are smoking and can I have some pleas?
What is scary is that Bama, LSU, Oklahoma could all have 1 loss, based on their legitimate schedule strength. That could leave Boise State & Wisconsin undefeated & possibly playing for the national championship. UGH!
A one loss SEC team will go to the title game before an undefeated Boise.
Maybe. Maybe not. Remember, the rest of the country DOES NOT want to see the SEC bring home #6. This might be the only way to prevent it. I’m serious.
I hope that’s the case. I just don’t think they’ll keep an undefeated team out of it again. Especially since Boise was ranked so high in preseason.
I think that LSU becoming the #1 team this week shows that the voters are starting to look at exactly what teams have done vs top opposition. LSU has already beaten three teams that were ranked at the time they played and one of them was in the top five. Not to mention that LSU STILL has to play Alabama, Florida, Auburn, and Arkansas.
BSU will never get into a major conference because it is only football. None of their other programs are anywhere near major conference level. It is a small school and its football team is the exception to the rest of the school.
Look when the PAC10 was expanding BSU was an option, the PAC10 took Colorado and Utah. Both of those programs (all sports and academics) dwarf everything that BSU had to offer. Will the Buffs or Utes be a top 25 program in football in the next few years? Probably for Utah, but that isn’t the point, the whole university was an addition to what the PAC10 (now 12) had.
Look at what Texas A&M adds to the SEC: AAU certification (probably the top thing that they can bring), the defending women’s NCAA DI champion, a historic football program, and all other programs that compete on the top level of their sport.
BSU has nothing else to offer any major conference. They will always be second class to the major conference schools. They will continue to schedule their one “tough” game a year and compete in a bowl game. But I see a time, coming very soon, where the voters finally of the cry “why not BSU?” with “Play a stronger schedule!!”
look at there schedule!! Ole MIss would be undefeated against that 2A high school schedule! look i’m not saying they are a horrible team, i’m just saying they dont deserve all the hype. you put in what you get out. the sec schools beat the life out of each other year in and out and boise walks through the park each year. this is why they can compete later in the year for 1 game they dont have a 6 or 7 game stretch of tough games. i wish LSU would have played boise st instead of oregon in the cowboy classic. we wouldn’t be having this discussion!
Come to Bryant-Denny and play one saturday and see how you fair Boise
How bout if Bama just went and played on the smurf turf instead?
Why would Bama want to go to BSU and play in front of 33,500 fans when every home game for Bama is in front of over 100,000 people?
That is why no-one plays at BSU, their stadium is too small to make the trip worthwhile.
Ok, but teams (including Bama) will go to Nashville and that stadium only holds 39,000. If Bama were to go to Boise, it wouldn’t be for the money, they get plenty of that through the SEC TV contract, it would be to shut up the Pat Forde’s of the world who are on the Boise State bus. Autzen Stadium in Oregon only holds 55K. So does Davis-Wade Stadium at Mississippi State. That doesn’t stop teams from traveling there. I think the bigger reason that so few teams (esp. from the SEC) want to go to Boise is they are just scared. They’re scared of the smurf turf, the elevation, the time difference, those are all of factors to overcome and it’s way easier to schedule a directional Louisiana school, a Sun Belt patsy, or some FCS lightweight at home, draw those 100,000 fans and buy a guaranteed win. I’m a Florida fan and we do the same thing (with the exception of playing FSU every year). I wish Florida would take on Boise on the road or at least in a truly neutral site (not play in Jacksonville, Orlando, or Tampa and call it neutral).
