No matter what you think about Cam Newton, you have to give this to him: he was able to rise above the monster distractions week-in and week-out during his incredible 2010 season at Auburn.
I’m not sure there has ever been a bigger storm for a college athlete to have to deal with while playing? Reggie Bush’s controversy came later while he was in the NFL. Cam Newton had to deal with the questions about his eligibility while he was playing and preparing for tough, tough teams like LSU, Alabama, South Carolina and Oregon.
Do NFL teams take this into account? Is this a positive that he was able to deal with this adversity and still perform at such a high level? Vince Young is a player that Newton is compared to frequently. Young when facing adversity essentially did not perform and instead became an emotional mess. This is likely the biggest difference in Vince Young and Cam Newton at least from the experiences that we can draw from.
