Georgia’s Defense Is The Story Against Tennessee

The Georgia Bulldogs aren’t winning pretty, but they surely don’t care because they are getting it done right now on both sides of the football. After starting out 0-2 on the year, Georgia has now defeated Tennessee to bring their SEC record to 3-1 on the year. They are right in the thick of things in the East.

The biggest reason Georgia is winning right now, and a big reason they won tonight, is their defense. If not for a late score by Tennessee, the Bulldogs would have held Tennessee two only two field goals on the night, and the defense has been playing lights out in the last several games. You have to give defensive coordinator Todd Grantham credit on how well his unit is playing.

Offensively, Georgia now has a running game, thanks to true freshman Isaiah Crowell. Crowell carried 19 times for 58 yards and two touchdowns. Crowell is a big part of the success of the offense in the last three weeks. He is a legitimate threat, and he adds another dimension for Mark Richt.

Quarterback Aaron Murray was 15 of 25 for 227 yards and no touchdowns, but he hit Malcolm Mitchell in the third quarter for a long pass to get in Tennessee territory, and the Bulldogs punched it in shortly thereafter.

Tennessee really could not get any offense going at all tonight, despite the fact that their offense has been dynamic in the passing game all year.

However, the biggest reason the Vols are 0-2 in the SEC is the lack of a running game. Tennessee rushed for negative yards in a loss earlier in the year to Florida, and they rushed for negative yards in this one.

Tennessee simply cannot win SEC games without a legit threat in the ground game. It will not happen.
