Auburn is still deciding on their quarterback after scrimmage one, and it didn’t exactly become any clearer, either. Clint Moseley’s shoulder still has inflammation, limiting his ability to throw. And Kiehl Frazier hasn’t exactly taken advantage of Moseley’s injury yet.
Offensive Coordinator Scot Loeffler:
“We’ve got some work to do still,” Loeffler said. “We’re not where we want to be yet, and we’re going to bust our rear end these next couple of weeks to be ready to compete in Atlanta.”
With Moseley hurt, Frazier and freshman Jonathan Wallace took the bulk of the 65 snaps.
The defense gave up a couple of huge plays and had a couple of major breakdowns in coverage. And that fired up new defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder.
The next scrimmage is Saturday.
Todd Gurley and Marlon Brown shined for the Bulldogs in their first scrimmage. Running back is a position of need, and freshman Todd Gurley gave them something to look forward to. In addition, receiver Marlon Brown had a great day, and what a big lift it would be if Brown can step up his game this year, especially while Malcolm Mitchell is playing defense early on. Brown was a much-hyped prospect out of high school.
Mark Richt on his freshman RB Gurley:
“Todd, he ran the ball well, but he had some good space provided for him at times where some other guys didn’t. I mean, Marshall had a great three-yard run one time but that doesn’t impress anybody unless you see it in person. I thought all the backs ran well really. There were a couple of times I didn’t think they hit it like they should have or could have. But it wasn’t bad.”
- RB Gurley had 6 carries for 58 yards and 1 TD
- RB Keith Marshall had 7 carries for 11 yards
- QB Aaron Murray was 12-17, 170 yards, 1 TD
- WR Brown caught 6 passes for 103 yards and 2 TDs
- WR Tavarres King caught 4 passes for 66 yards
