There has not been this much attention on a Vanderbilt coach in quite some time. James Franklin created a comment heard ’round the world yesterday when he said on the radio that he only hires assistant coaches once he has met their wives and given his approval:
“I’ve been saying it for a long time, I will not hire an assistant until I see his wife. If she looks the part and she’s a D1 recruit, then you got a chance to get hired. That’s part of the deal. There’s a very strong correlation between having the confidence, going up and talking to a woman, and being quick on your feet and having some personality and confidence and being articulate and confident, than it is walking into a high school and recruiting a kid and selling him.”
All three hosts and Franklin were laughing when the comment was made, and the comments were made all in good fun and in a joking manner.
But some obviously took offense. And I can see why, if the comments are taken out of context.
It won’t take you long after you look at his Twitter timeline to see his regret for making such comments:
My foot doesn’t taste good, I hope I did not offend any1, I love & respect ALL,have a great day, enjoy the fam & don’t forget 2 #AnchorDown

Attempt at humor obviously fell a few yds short. Was speaking to the courage it takes 4 men 2 approach the women who become their wives!!!!!

I clearly used language that doesn’t reflect my views on women and I am SORRY!

The Commodores fans probably know it was in good fun and are just happy to be making headlines. Some may have taken offense. That’s fine, too.
Franklin knows how to get the media all stirred up.
