Is Nick Saban a Hypocrite?

Regardless of who loses the SEC Championship Game on Saturday, the Florida Gators are going to jump them in the BCS Rankings to take 2nd place in the Southeastern Conference and go to the Sugar Bowl.

We have already discussed this in the Bowl Projections and that doesn’t come as a shock to anyone. What did seem shocking is Nick Saban’s comment on this situation. If Alabama loses to Georgia, the Crimson Tide will slide to the Capital One Bowl or potentially worse than that. According to the Palm Beach Post, Nick Saban said:

It’s not really a great scenario, You play your way into the SEC championship game, which means you’re the best team in your division. It doesn’t seem quite right, but it is what it is. I don’t really know what me commenting about it is going to do to change it. But I don’t feel good about it.

Did he forget that last year Alabama did NOT play in the SEC Championship Game?

They passed the loser of the SEC Championship Game and a couple other teams from other conferences in the BCS Rankings to play for the National Championship. Of all people, you would think that Nick Saban would not be the one to make a complaint about this situation!

A reporter asked Will Muschamp what he thought about Nick Saban’s comment and he responded with:

Well, I can switch and go to Atlanta if he doesn’t want to go to Atlanta and play (Georgia). Be careful what you ask for, Nick.

    Q. Big picture question for you. Much has been made of the double-edged sword of these conference championship games. The loser of this game would most likely not go to a BCS game, where Florida would. What do you think of how that plays out?

COACH SABAN: For either one of these teams it’s not really a great scenario. You play your way into the championship game, which means you’re the best team in your division, they’re the best team in their division. They played their way into the game by a total body of work for the whole season.
It doesn’t seem quite right. But it is what it is. I don’t really know what me commenting about it is going to do to change it. But I don’t feel good about it for our football team or their football team, either one.
But it is what it is.

  • I mean this is the dumbest thing I ever heard of you know it too if your in the sec championship and your #2 and #3 in the bcs rankings the winner should go to bcs and loser should go to sugar bowl cause if Georgia was to lose they would go to the sugar bowl so why can’t it be the same for alabama? I guarantee you the only reason this is being brought is because they got destroyed 42-10 last year by LSU then went onto LOSE against Michigan State in the Capitol one bowl. And will muschamp is just an idiot who tries to coach like nick Saban but in reality makes himself look like a dumbass.

    Roll Tide

  • Of course he is. How is this even a question? Saban wants to get to the best possible bowl, even if he loses. He doesn’t want to think that he will have gone from National Championship favorites to playing Michigan a second time in the Capital One Bowl or even Northwestern in the Outback Bowl. This is him getting ready to cry if he loses to Georgia, so he can make a “case”/”bid” for the Sugar Bowl that he had a harder road than Florida due to an extra game that Florida didn’t have to play. I think Nick is great coach, but all that matters to him is getting to the best bowl possible at this point in the season, and he doesn’t want the Outback steak he wants Sugar.

  • No. He was asked a question and he gave his answer. Nothing hypocritical about it. People are trying to read things into it because they already hate the fact that Alabama is in a position to return to the BCSNCG. They hate Saban because he wins, so anything he says will be labeled as “hypocritical” or whatever other negative word they can think of.

    • I don’t hate Alabama or Saban. I think he’s built a great program there, but I do think he has been bitching a little too much lately. First about the Texas A&M uptempo offense and now about Florida possibly getting a better bowl than Bama. It seems like when things don’t go his way he just turns to whining.

  • I hate to ruin perfectly good hyperbole, but Saban didn’t saying that UF is unworthy, just that it’s unseemly that an SEC division champ is excluded from a BCS bowl by the two-team rule. He isn’t complaining that it isn’t fair – just that “it doesn’t seem quite right.” Sorry, but that’s a perfectly reasonable opinion to have. Move along, nothin’ to see here.

  • To me it makes sense…listen, the division title means nothing anymore besides the opportunity to win the SEC. If we don’t beat Bama I say UF deserves to play in the sugar bowl over us.

    • Its a double edged sword…you win the game…you’re a Hero…but you lose and well…you’re packing for Orlando. And based on the season the gators have put together I’m ok with that.

  • What you seem to be forgetting is that uga’s loss in last year’s sec championship put them in a position of 3 losses and alabama had already been higher ranked than them since bama was a 1 loss team. It was a different situation completely.

  • I’ve felt this way for a long time about the SEC championship loser, they almost always get skipped over by a remaining BCS game and end up in Orlando. The whole system needs to be changed, imagine a national semi final game between Florida and Notre Dame, as the #1 and #4 teams and another semi final between Georgia and Alabama. I know something like this is coming, but this sould have been in place a long time ago. I don’t see Saban complaining here but I do see where some could say that he is upset with a process that he was able to benifit from just last year. This system is far from perfect, but I cant wait for a whale of a game Saturday in Atlanta.
If you look at Florida’s sechedule, four wins over teams in the top 12 or 13. I think they deserve a prime bowl as well. Wins over Texas AM, LSU, South Carolina and Florida State. A schedule much tougher than either Georgia or Alabam’s. Also its not as if Georgia whipped the floor with Florida. Florida was driving for the lead when their sixth turnover of the game allowed Georgia to take control.
May the best team win Saturday.
