Recapping the SEC coaching carousel so far


Coaching news and rumors are fast and furious this time of the season, and SDS gets you caught up on all the coaching news for every team and staff in the SEC.


  • DC Kirby Smart was interviewed at Auburn, but he did not end up with the job and signed another deal with Alabama.
  • DB coach Jeremy Pruitt is headed to Florida State to be their new defensive coordinator.
  • But Nick Saban once again keeps a majority of his staff together, and we wonder how Alabama is dominant every year? Lower coaching turnover certainly is a great place to start.


  • Bret Bielema has hired four assistant coaches so far.
  • Former Tennessee OC Jim Chaney will coach the same position at Arkansas.
  • Former Wisconsin DC Chris Ash will coach the same position at Arkansas.
  • Former Wisconsin DL coach Charlie Partridge will coach the same position at Arkansas.
  • Former Tennessee OL coach Sam Pittman will coach the same position at Arkansas.


  • Gus Malzahn has hired three assistant coaches at Auburn thus far.
  • Former Southern Miss head coach Ellis Johnson will serve as the co-defensive coordinator.
  • Former Clemson co-DC Charlie Harbison was hired for the same position at Auburn.
  • Former Arkansas State and Gus Malzahn protégé Rhett Lashlee was hired as the OC.
  • Malzhan offered a job to South Carolina prep coach Bobby Bentley to coach the quarterbacks. He has not accepted the job yet, though.


  • Will Muschamp hired former Kentucky coach Joker Phillips as his wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator.


  • Mark Stoops has wasted little time putting his Kentucky staff together.
  • Stoops hired former Kentucky player and former Texas Tech OC Neal Brown for the same position at UK.
  • Former FSU DE Coach DJ Eliot was hired as Stoops’ DC.
  • Former Troy OL coach John Schlarman was hired to coach the same position at Kentucky.
  • Stoops hired former Nebraska TE coach Vince Marrow to coach the same position at Kentucky.
  • Former Kentucky running back and Texas Tech RB coach Chad Scott was hired for the same position at UK.
  • Former Northwestern State head coach Bradley Dale Peveto will coach the safeties and be the special teams coordinator.
  • Stoops has targeted Jimmy Brumbaugh to coach the defensive line, but no confirmation has been made yet.


  • OC and QB coach David Yost stepped down at the end of the season after Missouri’s worst offensive team in some years.
  • Gary Pinkel promoted Josh Henson to offensive coordinator, after he served as the co-offensive line coach since 2009.
  • WRs Coach Andy Hill will move over to coach the quarterbacks.
  • Pinkel is looking outside the program to fill the remaining WR coach vacancy.


  • Butch Jones wasted no time completing his entire staff at Tennessee.
  • New WR coach Zach Azzanni was the final hire, and he comes from Wisconsin.
  • Jones retained RB coach and former Vol player Jay Graham, and Graham was the only staff member held over from Derek Dooley’s regime.
  • Jones brought five coaches from Cincinnati with him.
  • OC Mike Bajakian, OL Don Mahoney, TE Mark Elder, DC John Jancek and DL Steve Stripling will all coach the same positions at Tennessee.
  • Former Auburn LB coach Tommy Thigpen will coach the same position at Tennessee.
  • Former Auburn secondary coach Willie Martinez will coach the same position at Tennessee.
  • Jones made a run at former Tennessee quarterback and current USC WR coach Tee Martin, but Martin turned down his alma mater for Lane Kiffin and the Trojans.

Texas A&M

  • OC Kliff Kingsbury was hired at his alma mater Texas Tech to be the next head coach after Tommy Tuberville bolted to Cincinnati.


  • Former Tennessee defensive coordinator Sal Sunseri has joined Florida State’s coaching staff.
