South Carolina linebacker Angelo Watley was arrested on Sunday afternoon for three charges and is being detained at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. Watley has been suspended from all football related activities. Watley was charged with grand larceny of a good valued more than $2,000 but less than $10,000. He was also charged with theft and violent burglary in the second degree. He is being held on $50,000 bond by the city. He is accused of stealing a MacBook, iPad and money. This is crazy. [WISTV.com]
One of Kentucky’s top linebackers, Ridge Wilson, was dismissed from the team after his felony arrest late Monday on felony drug charges. Wilson was a rising senior, and he was one of the top returners on the Wildcats’ team. Wilson was arrested because he was found leaning down over the driver’s seat when the police approached his car. He then acted very nervous and kept mentioning he played football for Kentucky. Upon searching his vehicle, a bag of Xanax pills were found in the back pocket of some jeans in the rear of the car. Goodbye, Ridge. [Kentucky Sports]
Four-star recruit Alex Kozan, from the 2012 recruiting cycle, made it official by signing with Auburn yesterday. He becomes the Tigers’ 22nd player in the class to sign. Kozan committed to Iowa before National Signing Day but changed his mind and chose Auburn over Michigan. He’s 6’4″, 295lbs and he should be able to help this club in what was already a strong offensive line class for Auburn with the signing of Jordan Diamond and Avery Young. [AL.com]
Former Florida running back Chris Rainey ran a 4.45, 40-yard dash at the NFL combine. Rainey could be projected to go between the second and fourth rounds in the draft. Rainey prefers to play running back, but he will see time at wide receiver and on special teams. He is electric in the open field as long as someone doesn’t breath on him to take him down. Kentucky just recently announced Pat Washington as a new assistant football coach. Washington has been hired to replace Tee Martin, who left for USC. Washington played football at Auburn in the mid-1980s. Washington has had a relationship with Kentucky offensive coordinator Randy Sanders for quite a while, and that was certainly a big draw…not to mention getting to coach in the best conference in America. Nick Saban recently tried to lure Georgia defensive back commit Shaq Wiggins to commit to the Crimson Tide. It did not work. Wiggins said that Saban said he would offer him a scholarship to the University of Alabama if he would commit…today. That evidently scared Wiggins away, and he has said repeatedly that he will stay committed to Georgia at the end of the day. I’ve heard that before, though. [USA Today]
