SEC Football Daily: July 12th

Nick Saban approves of the new playoff system. Saban had this to say about the new system: “In 1997, I said we should have a plus-one or a four-team playoff because most of the years there are issues, it’s when there are three (qualified) teams,” he said. “People can’t agree on who should be 1 and 2 and should play, and who gets left out. It happened when I was at LSU in 2003 and Southern Cal got left out.” Come 2014 the BCS system as we know it will be an afterthought, and even coaches are pumped about it. [AL]

Really good article about Arkansas’ chances of an SEC title are still on place. Even with Bobby Petrino gone, the Hogs are expected to compete for an SEC Championship. The writer resurrects some memories of Arkansas’ stumbling baby steps upon entering the SEC from the SWC. The writer also forecasts what’s in store for Missouri as they enter year one. Arkansas has been in this position before, and they can give some insight to Tigers fans what they are up against. Ironically, these two will create a border state rivalry. [Columbia Tribune]

Auburn commit Dee Liner has been arrested twice in 10 days. He is accused of disorderly conduct and trespassing. The first arrest came after police say Liner yelled several things at officers including “Let my f****** mother go. You’re not going to tell me what to do.” Liner was also caught jumping a fence leading to a public pool for the trespassing charge. Can’t these kids stay out of trouble? They have so much going for them, and it’s frustrating to just watch them blow it sometimes. I wonder what Auburn will have to say about this… [AL]

Should Mark Richt be on the hot seat in 2012? It would be unprecedented for a coach who took his team to the SEC Championship game last year to be gone the next no matter how bad the record is. There is just too much talent for Richt not to win games this year. This year could be very different, as Georgia has likely the best defense in the SEC and maybe the country. I look for Georgia to be the East member representing in Atlanta come December. There’s a long way to get to that point, but the players are in uniform to get it done. [AJC]

Kentucky football fan day is set for August 4th at Commonwealth Stadium. The gates open at 5 PM and the team practices at 6 PM. “Fan Day is always one of our favorite days of fall camp because we get to interact with the Big Blue Nation,” Coach Joker Phillips said in a news release. “I look forward to seeing everyone there.” Kentucky opens up the season on September 2nd against Louisville. Former Alabama QB Phillip Sims will be in a UVA uniform this year. Sims transferred from Bama a couple months ago citing “personal reasons”. UVA filed paperwork last month to allow Sims to compete this year. And it worked. “I am pleased we were able to work with the NCAA to get a resolution regarding this matter,” said Virginia coach Mike London in a statement. “We look forward to having Phillip and the rest of our team in camp this August.” [CBS Sports]

  • Georgia with the best defense in the SEC? dunno about that one.

  • Yes, UGA “could” have one of the top defenses in the country if they could get out of their own way….it will be interesting to see how they do without Cummings, Olgetree and Smith for a couple games.

Now that Auburn has mega-recruit Ruebun Foster (along with his 3 yr old daughter + Baby Momma) they can stand some attrition. I wonder how soon Ruebun’s Mother starts working for Auburh Ath Dept??
