Will Missouri and Texas A&M be competitive in the SEC? I think that’s a question everyone wants to know, especially members of both fan bases. Missouri waited too long to pump money into the athletics budget when it joined the Big 12. However, in order to be competitive moving forward, both Mizzou and TAMU will need to recruit the southeast and really reel in players who are bigger and stronger compared to what they have been traditionally recruiting. But neither team has a history of recruiting the southeast; therefore, it will take time to break into the lock that the other SEC programs have in the region. [AL]

Harvey Updyke is ready for trial this week. He has been staying with his family in Louisiana since he was released on bond. Jury selection will start Tuesday, and the selection process could be quite lengthy. “I think the case has been wearing on Harvey over time,” said Birmingham attorney Everett Wess. “I think he’s ready for all of this to be over. We’ll kick it off on Monday and be ready to go.” [AL]

Florida LB Neiron Ball passed his final medical check-up and is ready to participate in practice. Ball has been on the road to recovery since 2011 when a blood vessel burst in his brain. Ball will be on the depth chart at LB this year, and he should make an impact on the position. The 6-2, 222lb player was a pretty highly thought of prospect exiting high school. [Gator Sports]

Some Georgia fans think it’s time to bring back the black jerseys. They first appeared in 2007 against Auburn and against Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl. However, in 2008, Alabama thrashed Georgia at home, black jerseys and all. “Unfortunately, a large majority of Dawg fans associate failure with the black jerseys. I, however, remember the good times more than the bad. They look good, the kids love them, and it is 100% an official color of the university. I wish they would become more of a mainstay, and be part of the rotation frequently enough that many of the negative Nancy’s won’t freak out at the thought of them. I will always support red as the main color of the program, and feel at least 80% of all home games are played in the classic red jerseys. However, it should not be so out of the ordinary to enjoy the other color once in a while.” [AJC]

This writer thinks we should select the four playoff teams by forming a committee. Recently, Bobby Bowden came out and said he would want to represent a spot on the committee, made up of former coaches, but I’m not so sure that’s a good idea. Studies have been shown to prove that coaches are bias toward their team in the coaches poll. Currently, there is a bias around the country about the SEC, and I’m not sure that wouldn’t continue if we select a committee. [Tennessean]
