The SEC has 10 schedule quirks this year. No doubt the biggest quirk for two years in a row is Georgia’s escape of the SEC West’s best again. Georgia will not have to face Alabama, LSU or Arkansas. This could be their best team in a long time on both sides of the ball, and this is their year. Georgia has the defense, the talent, and furthermore, the schedule to get an SEC Championship this season. It’s now or never for the Dawgs. [AL]
Arkansas QB commit Austin Allen is going to the Elite 11 regional finals. The 11 QB competition selected 25 high school QBs to compete. A good showing could get Allen to the Elite 11 finals. Allen threw for 4,150 yards and 46 touchdowns, ultimately leading his team to a state championship. There is a lot of prestige that comes with even being selected in this capacity. Auburn transfer FB Jay Prosch was granted transfer waiver to let him play this year. Prosch is a transfer from Illinois. He transferred to Auburn to be closer to his ailing mother, who still lives in Mobile. She’s battling brain cancer. The NCAA required documentation, however, for all waivers filed by schools. The NCAA got it right, this time. I’m looking forward to seeing this animal take the field for the Tigers. [AL]
Tennessee football player Daniel Hood found the bodies of his mother and her boyfriend on the bathroom floor of a West Knox County apartment. The Knox County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting deaths. Hood was called by his grandmother to go check on the welfare of his mother because she was not returning any calls. Hood forced his way into the apartment and discovered the bodies. [Knox News]
The game time for TAMU’s season opener against Louisiana Tech has been scheduled for 6:30 PM on ESPNU on Friday, August 30th. The Aggies and all their new SEC glory will open in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana. This marks the first time the Aggies have opened up on the road since 2005 at Clemson. I’m sure many SEC fans will be tuned into that game to get a first look at their new rival. [My San Antonio]
