Alabama football is nominated for an ESPY award. The Tide are up for the best team award for their performance and shutout of LSU in the national championship game. Alabama’s football team will face stiff competition against Baylor women’s basketball, Miami Heat, Kentucky basketball, LA Kings, New York Giants and St. Louis Cardinals. I’m not so sure they will win this away, but nonetheless, it’s a great honor to be nominated. [AL]

Huntsville Airport is offering seats for Alabama-Michigan game in Arlington. Non-stop Huntsville-to-Dallas flights have been arranged. The total cost per person is $498.20. The flight departs Friday, August 31st and returns Sunday, September 2nd. Ticketing deadline is Friday. Don’t miss out on this offer if you are in the Alabama area and want to attend this game. [AL]

The three Arkansas football players who were arrested and charged with felonies for allegedly burglarizing another students’ room have pleaded not guilty. Marquel Wade, Maudrecus Humphrey and Andrew Peterson entered pleas yesterday. The three are currently not on the team, but John L. Smith says he’ll reconsider their status once the legal process is complete. [Arkansas Sports 360]

Auburn is the team that put all the playoff talk in motion. The 2004 undefeated team that never played for a national championship had more impact than LSU-Alabama rematch last year. Tommy Tubberville’s team did everything they could do but went down in history with nothing to show for it. It’s highly likely that undefeated Auburn will be the last undefeated team to be denied of a national championship. [AL]

Florida will certainly face some quality QBs this season, starting with Aaron Murray. UF also will have to contend with the dual-threat James Franklin from Missouri, as well as Tyler Bray, EJ Manuel, Jordan Rodgers, Connor Shaw and Zach Mettenberger. Murray, Franklin and Bray will be more than a handful, with Mettenberger actually having the best potential out of all of the QBs on the list. [Gator Sports]

Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze had some input on who the playoff selection committee should be. “All of us regardless of what we say, the truth is all of us have conference affiliations,” Freeze said. “If you just do it with all coaches, that opens it up to some loyalties. I don’t think it would be intentional. Most every coach I have ever met are good people and want to get things right. … I certainy think it has to have some flavor (like conference or school administrators) there.” [Clarion Ledger]

  1. your proofreader must have gone on strike — checking my schedule I can’t find TX-MICH to be played at arlington on Sept 1. I do however see AL-MICH, which makes much more sense, considering the thrust of the article.

Hugh has Mettenberger even thrown a pass in the SEC? He has more potential than Aron Murray (36 TD’s last year). Bray at UT that can throw it all over the place (and has proved it !!)

Mettenburger who was fighting Murray at UGA for a starting true freshaman job? Now has the most potential.

Holy Crap some people should be band from writing about football.

  3. What you mean Auburn didn’t win anything in 2004??? They bought National Championship rings……

  4. Actually Mett looked better than Murray in that G Day game and had it not been for the ol’ “Hand up the Skirt” trick I’d wager Mett would’ve started over Murray.

I got a feeling it was the lying to Richt about what or how severe the incident was that got Mett in Richt’s Dawg house and ultimately off the team. His Mother was a secretary in the Atheltic Dept at the time so it couldn’t have been an easy decision.

That’s not to say Mett is “better” than Murray at this point but I think Mett has a much brighter up side than Murray. Murray has just not got it done in big games so far.

I’d love a LSU/UGA rematch SECCG with a Mett vs Murray showdown.

      I agree with you.

Mett physically is the most impressive QB in the SEC. Prior to Tyler Wilson taking a snap, I thought Wilson would be the breakout player of the year. He was indeed that. And I kind of think that Mett will be the breakout player of the year as well. While I think Murray is good, we know exactly what he is. He’s only won two games against ranked opponents in two years. I like Murray a lot, but I’m just not sold on his ability to win a championship….yet. He could put it all together this year. He has all the talent to do so.

I think you might get your wish on a UGA/LSU rematch. I can certainly see that happening in a heartbeat.
