SEC Football Daily: May 10th

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany says non-division winners don’t belong in the new playoff system. Look, he’s just watching out for his hind end and his conference. He realizes that if the conference winners don’t automatically get in, it is a shot in the dark that a Big Ten team gets in, seeing their impeccable record against the SEC recently. Whatever makes the most money is how the four teams will be selected, whether that is conference champions or whether it’s an at-large selection. If not conference champions, what will that process look like? []

Delany’s discussion then takes us into the question – will a four-team at-large selection playoff format mean extra championship chances for the SEC? Last year, two of the teams would have been LSU and Alabama. In fact, if the top four had been chosen from the past six years, the SEC would have had two teams selected in three of those six years. This, of course, is a reason why leaders such as Jim Delany are arguing against it. []

Florida DT Dominique Easley is ahead of schedule of where he should be in his recovery from his ACL tear. Easley is one of the quickest defensive linemen I’ve seen in quite a while. Meanwhile, Ronald Powell is staying both summer sessions to rehab his recent ACL tear during the spring game. Powell said he is going to try and make it back for some of next season, but many do not think that is realistic. [Gator Sports]

Florida DE Tevin Westbrook is changing to TE this season. Muschamp said he wanted to give Westbrook a look at tight end in the spring because the Gators were very thin at that position. Westbrook is 6-5, 268lbs and should get a look in running situations. He gives Florida a big body at tight end to create some mismatches off tackle. [Palm Beach Post]

Freshman OL John Theus will have an opportunity to start for Georgia this season. Cordy Glenn, Ben Jones, Trinton Sturdivant and Clint Boling all had the opportunity the start in year one. Starting at OL your freshman season in the SEC is a big deal, and many never accomplish that feat. Georgia’s freshmen report June 4th. [Dog Bytes]

Recently, ESPN’s Mel Kiper released his top DEs heading into next year’s draft. Two LSU DEs made the list in Barkevious Mingo and Sam Montgomery. Mingo is a freak with his speed off the edge, and Montgomery is more of your prototypical DE. Two possible top five picks playing book ends at LSU. The Tigers must be loving it. [NOLA]

South Carolina landed top QB recruit Connor Mitch. Mitch may be the best QB that Steve Spurrier has landed while at South Carolina. Mitch is 6-3, 220lbs and has a cannon for an arm. He said that the biggest factor in his decision was the coaching staff at SC. Mitch threw for 3,832 yards and 51 touchdowns; 51! Great get by the Gamecocks. [Charlotte Observer]
