There is more and more talk that heralded RB recruit and Georgia commit Derrick Henry could flip to Alabama. Henry is a 6’3″ RB, and you simply do not see that type of athlete everyday. Henry likes Nick Saban and the success the Tide has had recently, both on the field and in the NFL. Henry had this to say – “I’m not as solid as I was before because I think really highly of Alabama, as you can tell. A lot of schools like Ole Miss and USC have been by showing interest. We’re hoping to go on the visit to Alabama and then see how it goes.” Quite frankly, I’m not sold on him playing RB, either. This will be a fight. [AL.com]
This could be the time for college football to have an early signing period. Florida and Georgia both have 16 commitments, while TAMU has 15. Alabama just had three top prospects commit to them in the past week. All those verbals do not amount to anything until the player signs on the line, though. We all know that. But is it the right time for an early signing period? Once a player commits, other schools pursue that recruit more than ever to try to get him to flip his decision. The recruit and his family suffer in this case. [AL.com]
Will Muschamp expects the young offense to grow up this season. Florida’s offense was putrid last year with a senior QB. Jacoby Brissett and Jeff Driskel will be better than Brantley in the long run. The thing about Florida is that the defense is ready to play for an SEC Championship, but the offense is a year away. Florida has to be able to run the football. If not, the Gators are dead in the water. The O-Line should be better, along with the QBs. But the biggest question marks are at RB and WR. There is just not much maturity there. [Gator Sports]
Mark Richt and Todd Grantham are getting raises. Richt’s new five-year deal will be public soon, as the Georgia Athletic Association’s end-of-the-year board meeting is scheduled to get started tomorrow morning. Richt and the university have been going back and forth on the contract negotiations since the end of last football season in December. This time last year, Grantham was the second highest paid DC, making $752,000. Now, he’s not even the second highest paid DC in the SEC. [AJC]
Tennessee TE Cam Clear is suspended indefinitely for stealing a laptop. He was arrested while sitting at the entrance of Neyland Stadium when the police caught him surfing the Internet with the laptop. Derek Dooley has suspended Clear indefinitely this morning. Clear faces up to $10,000 on felony theft charges. Hello SEC players: if your name is Cam, don’t steal a laptop. [Go Vols Xtra]
