SDS is continually counting down the top 25 players in the SEC for 2012, and we’re not stopping until we get to No. 1.
Sam Montgomery – No. 6
Next up in SDS’ top 25 countdown for 2012 is LSU defensive end Sam Montgomery.
In 2010, Montgomery suffered a season-ending knee injury and missed the final eight games of the season.
However, he came back with a vengeance this past season and looked close to full strength. Montgomery was a force at defensive end for the Tigers, and he absolutely was a difference-maker in 2011. His size, combined with his speed and quickness, could land Montgomery playing some outside linebacker at the next level, along with defensive end.
At 245lbs, Montgomery is very versatile, and he can play with his hand on the ground or in a hybrid position, something that is very attractive to scouts and teams in the NFL.
While 245lbs seems light, Montgomery’s specialty is a speed rusher off the edge. One thing he does need to work on is his strength. But you have to remember this kid missed a ton of playing time in 2010 because of that injury. So, he will get better and better the more times he is on a field for more snaps.
The rising redshirt junior had a very good season in 2011, and it had him at least considering putting his name in the hat for the upcoming NFL Draft. However, after thinking it over for several days, Montgomery made the decision to return to LSU and get his degree. And I think this is the best decision he could have made.
With another year and another off-season under his belt, the sky is truly the limit for him and his ability that he brings to the table.
In 2011, Montgomery led the team in sacks and ranked third in the SEC with 9.0 sacks overall. He was seventh in the SEC with 13.0 tackles for loss.
Montgomery will be playing opposite Barkevious Mingo, and combined, these two rush defensive ends should live in opponents’ backfields.
There is much to be excited about returning along the defensive line for the Tigers in 2012.
