Here are a few updates from practices and scrimmages from this weekend:
Alabama – Scrimmage
- Nick Saban overall happy with the scrimmage
- Saban also likes the ability his LBs have showed so far
- QB AJ McCarron was 19-29 for 222 yards and one TD
- RB Eddie Lacy had eight carries for 57 yards
- RB TJ Yeldon had 13 carries for 24 yards and two TDs
- WR Amari Cooper had three catches for 52 yards and one TD
- LB Trey DePriest had five tackles and one interception
Arkansas – Scrimmage
- The consensus is the defense won the overall scrimmage
- The defense racked up 25 tackles for loss, 12 sacks and a pair of interceptions
- There was a stretch during the scrimmage where the defense flat-out dominated the offense
- Freshman LB Otha Peters picked off Tyler Wilson
- The defense was without Safety Eric Bennett and linebackers Tenarius Wright and Alonzo Highsmith – they continue to heal from ailments suffered early in camp
- Tyler Wilson completed 21 of 39 passes for 288 yards with four touchdowns
- Former backup QB Brandon Mitchell hauled in nine passes for 74 yards and a pair of touchdowns
- Cobi Hamilton, Keante Minor and Chris Gragg all had touchdown grabs and at least four receptions
- Dennis Johnson carried 15 times for 76 yards with a touchdown
- Knile Davis still held out of full contact
Auburn – Scrimmage
- Gene Chizik spoke of inconsistencies throughout the scrimmage
- Chizik said the QBs didn’t make enough plays to decide anything about the QB race between Kiehl Frazier and Clint Moseley
- Chizik said the defense is still giving up too many explosive plays
- The RB depth is thin – Jovon Robinson missed practice because of the academic investigation, Onterio McCalebb was held out of practice and Tre Mason was limited
Florida – Scrimmage
- Will Muschamp will likely not release any scrimmage info until Monday. He’s very tight-lipped.
- The Bulldogs celebrated their end of camp ‘Watermelon day’
- Freshmen RBs Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall are going to play
- Freshman OL John Theus is pushing for major playing time
- Sophomore DB/WR Malcolm Mitchell was in a non-contact jersey nursing a sore shoulder contusion
- QBs Morgan Newton and Max Smith are both ahead of Patrick Towles in the QB race
- Smith could be the starter, as OC Randy Sanders has done ‘a really nice job’
- Sanders also said it was obvious that Newton was coming off of shoulder surgery
- Both threw interceptions Saturday
- WR La’Rod King caught a TD on a fade route
- RB CoShik Williams made some big plays, according to the coaching staff
- LB Malcolm McDuffen and CB Cartier Rice both had interceptions
- Freshmen RBs Dyshawn Mobley and Justin Taylor both moved piles and caused an “explosion” while blocking
LSU – Scrimmage
- Zach Mettenberger threw the ball well in practice, as he completed 15 of 30 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns – the scoring passes were a 55-yarder to Odell Beckham Jr. and a 31-yarder to James Wright
- Miles said redshirt freshman quarterback Stephen Rivers completed six of 10 passes for 100 yards
- Penn State transfer Rob Bolden was four of eight passing
- Freshman Jeremy Hill showed some “really nice moves” and led the way with 71 yards.
- Kenny Hilliard ran eight times for 31 yards
- Michael Ford had 30 yards on four carries
- Jalen Collins and Jalen Mills competed in Tyrann Mathieu’s spot, with Mills playing the most first team corner
Mississippi State – Practice
- MSU worked on goal-line offense and defense
- Offensive coordinator Les Koenning said he thought QB Tyler Russell was still a bit slow at times in the red zone pulling the trigger
Missouri – Scrimmage
- James Franklin was 18 of 22 for 228 yards and completed his first nine passes
- Pressure from defensive line caused some of Franklin’s passes to be short
- The defense won the overall scrimmage 16-12
- The Tigers were working on sprinting to the ball to get set up after a deep completion in order to attack the defense and keep them on their heels, Oregon style
- WR Dorial Green-Beckham caught four passes for 20 yards
- RB Kendial Lawrence rushed 11 times for 37 yards and a TD
- DT Sheldon Richardson had three tackles for loss
- CB EJ Gaines rocked DGB on a pass over the middle that jarred the ball loose for an incompletion
Ole Miss – Scrimmage
- QBs Bo Wallace and Barry Brunetti, who are currently going head-to-head for the job, both completed less than 50 percent of their passes and threw two interceptions each
- Wallace was 11-24 for 145 yards and a TD, two INTs
- Brunetti was 12-25 for 94 yards, two INTs
- Hugh Freeze was not happy how either QB performed
- Wallace had the throw of the day with a 41-yard strike to Philander Moore through coverage
- The DBs were ball hawks all day
- Freshmen RBs I’Tavius Mathers and Jaylen Walton ran hard all day long – Mathers ran for two touchdowns and Walton one
- Aaron Morris, Jeff Scott, Collins Moore and Charles Sawyer were all missing
- Randall Mackey’s scored TD on a swing pass – he weaved through the defense up field for an 18-yard score
South Carolina – Scrimmage
- Freshmen WR Shaq Roland and TE Jerell Adams shined
- Roland caught four passes for 59 yards, including a 27-yard TD
- Adams had a 23-yard catch and a 43-yard TD reception
- Backup Andrew Clifford played the best of all the QBs, connecting on six of nine passes for 122 yards and two TDs
- 10 different WRs caught passes
Tennessee – Scrimmage
- RB Rajion Neal rushed for 134 yards on nine carries, including a 68-yard TD
- RBs Marlin Lane and Devrin Young combined for 15 carries for 70 yards
- QB Tyler Bray threw for 189 yards and a TD
- WR Da’Rick Rogers caught six passes for 105 yards and a TD
- WR Justin Hunter had seven catches for 47 yards
- WR Cordarrell Patterson wore a non-contact jersey and only caught one pass
- Freshman RB Davante Borque got hurt last week and is not with the team – Derek Dooley is not sure when he will make a return
- DL Darrington Sentimore had three sacks
Texas A&M – Scrimmage
- Assumed starting QB Jameill Showers was outshined by his backups Johnny Manziel and Matt Joeckel
- Kevin Sumlin might have to wait longer now to name a starting QB
- Manziel was 18 of 22 for 212 yards and three TDs
- Joeckel was 11 of 19 for 100 yards and three TDs
- Showers was only 16 of 24 for 80 yards
- RB Trey Williams had eight carries for 135 yards and three TDs
- Freshman CB De’Vante Harris is practicing with first team
Vanderbilt – Scrimmage
- RBs Zac Stacy, Warren Norman and Brian Kimbrow totaled seven TDs
- QB Jordan Rodgers was 12 of 16 passing for 153 yards and a TD
- DL Johnell Thomas had a pair of tackles for loss and a sack
- RB Kimbrow fumbled for the only turnover
- LB Tristan Strong is no longer a part of the team
