Here’s everything you need to know about Tennessee vs. NC State.

When: Friday, August 31st
Where: Atlanta, Georgia – Georgia Dome
Game Time: 7:30 PM ET
TV: ESPNU
Line: Tennessee (-3)

Game Buzz: These two teams haven’t hooked up since 1939, and the series is tied 1-1. Both Derek Dooley and NC State head coach Tom O’Brien have gushed over each other, with Dooley saying the Wolfpack could beat anyone in the SEC, and O’Brien calling Tennessee a power house. Both teams are ready to get this kicked off.

Tennessee Volunteers

Players to watch:

  • QB Tyler Bray
  • WR Justin Hunter
  • WR Cordarrelle Patterson
  • DL Daniel McCullers
  • LB AJ Johnson
  • LB Curt Maggit
  • DB Brian Randolph

Freshman to watch:

  • WR Cody Blanc

One glaring weakness: Running Game

Team Buzz: This is a make-or-break season for Derek Dooley and the Vols. After recently letting his best player go in WR Da’Rick Rogers for multiple failed drug tests, it puts maybe even more pressure on this club. Tennessee will feature an explosive passing game, and the Vols hope to develop a stronger running game than last season when they finished last in the SEC. Tennessee’s defense is good, but there is not much depth on the line or at linebacker. It’s go-time for Tennessee.

NC State Wolfpack

Players to watch:

  • QB Mike Glennon
  • RB James Washington
  • RB Tony Creecy
  • WR Tobias Palmer
  • CB David Amerson
  • SS Earl Wolff

Freshmen to watch:

  • WR Charlie Hegedus
  • OL Quincy McKinney
  • WR Kakeem Flowers

One glaring weakness: Linebacker

Team Buzz: NC State matches up with Tennessee particularly well because they led the country in INTs (27) last season, and the Vols’ strength is exactly that: passing the ball. The Wolfpack feature a future NFL QB in Mike Glennon who really can make every throw on the field, and a very aggressive, ball-hawking secondary. This game is about more than a win for NC State – it’s about conference pride anytime you play the SEC.
