Weekend scrimmage results and team notes

Alabama – Scrimmage

  • Bama scrimmaged in the rain over the weekend
  • Nick Saban was pleased with the first stringers on both sides of the ball
  • Saban singled out AJ McCarron, freshman RB TJ Yeldon and WR Kevin Norwood as guys who had good days
  • McCarron finished 12 of 23 for 242 yards and two TDs
  • Yeldon finished with 16 carries for 60 yards and two TDs
  • RB Eddie Lacy is day-to-day with an ankle sprain
  • WR Amari Cooper has nagging foot injury and is day-to-day
  • Saban said freshmen DBs Landon Collins and Geno Smith are developing nicely
  • LB CJ Mosley had six tackles, one sack, two tackles for loss and one pick-six

Arkansas – Scrimmage

  • Offense had a great day
  • Tyler Wilson threw for 252 yards on 22 completions for three TDs
  • Backup QB Brandon Allen led the team on five scoring drives on nine possessions
  • Allen finished 16 of 23 for 262 with four TDs and two INTs
  • WR Cobi Hamilton hauled in 11 catches for 165 yards and two TDs
  • Freshman RB Jonathan Williams had 115 yards rushing and two TDs
  • RB Dennis Johnson missed scrimmage due to grandmother’s death
  • RB Knile Davis did not take contact again
  • LBs Tenarius Wright and Alonzo Highsmith and safety Eric Bennet were also held out due to earlier injuries – more preventative than anything

Auburn – Scrimmage

  • Still no updates in the QB race, as the scrimmage was more situational-based
  • Gene Chizik seemed pleased overall with the progress made in the scrimmage
  • No major injury updates, which is great news
  • Quan Bray is the leader to be the punt returner, with Trovon Reed as the backup
Florida – Practice
  • QBs Jacoby Brissett and Jeff Driskel still even after Saturday
  • Freshman TE Kent Taylor made some great plays and will figure to be valuable this season
  • Coaching staff continually finding ways for Omarius Hines to be in the lineup, whether at RB, H-Back or TE
  • Gators still searching for impact WR
  • Freshman BUCK Dante Fowler impressing everyone
  • DB Marcus Roberson looks to follow in the mold of Joe Haden and Janoris Jenkins as a lockdown corner

Georgia – Practice

  • Mark Richt criticized Jay Rome for not practicing as hard as he can
  • Cornelius Washington worked with OLBs during practice, after making the move to DE
  • Washington may play some OLB because of Chase Vasser’s suspension
  • WRs Tavarres King and Rantavious Wooten were both out with injuries

Kentucky – Scrimmage

  • Offense reportedly had a 14-play, 98-yard TD drive
  • Offense showed more consistency, with fewer turnovers and penalties
  • QB Max Smith did pilot the TD drive
  • WR La’Rod King caught two TD passes
  • Demarco Robinson and EJ Fields also added scores
  • DC Rick Minter was upset his DLine didn’t rise to the challenge against the OL

LSU – Off Day

  • Given day off by Les Miles
  • Preseason practice is over, and the Tigers will have a different mindset entering next week
  • Practices will be less physical moving forward

Mississippi State – Scrimmage

  • Scrimmage was closed to public, and no stats were given
  • Mullen said it was “good and bad” with a lot of teachable moments
  • Mullen criticized QB Tyler Russell for his ‘practice-y’ mentality
  • WR Jameon Lewis impressed Mullen very much, but it’s unclear what Lewis did to impress Mullen, because he wouldn’t say
  • Mullen also singled out and praised three players – DB Dee Arrington, DB Jamerson Love and RB Derrick Milton

Missouri – Practice

  • Team is getting a bit more healthy from the week before
  • Several players still sat out drills, including WRs TJ Moe and L’Damian Washington
  • Tigers get OL Justin Britt back after he broke a bone in his foot a few weeks before camp began
  • QB James Franklin did not throw because of a scheduled day off of throwing to rest the surgically repaired shoulder
  • WR Dorial Green-Beckham playing a lot better now and seems to be getting open as he progresses – the QBs are hitting DGB on deep routes, and he’s catching everything in sight
  • DGB will try and replicate TJ Moe’s crazy freshman receptions number at 92

Ole Miss – Scrimmage

  • QB Bo Wallace could be close to being named the starter for game one
  • Wallace finished 14 of 25 for 85 yards passing, with two TDs and one INT
  • WR Donte Moncrief had a 20-yard TD reception from Wallace – he led all WRs with five catches for 39 yards and two TDs
  • QB Barry Brunetti took half the snaps with first and second team and was 6 of 12 for 57 yards with one TD and one INT
  • RB I’Tavius Mathers ran for 100 yards on 13 carries with three TDs
  • RB Jaylen Walton ran for 42 yards on eight carries
  • Cody Prewitt caused Wallace’s one INT and took it back 100 yards for a TD
  • DC Dave Wommack made his defense run sprints for 10-15 minutes following practice because they didn’t play as hard as he would have liked
  • DE Channing Ward didn’t play, but he was working one-on-one drills with DL coach Chris Kiffin

South Carolina – Scrimmage

  • Steve Spurrier said it was a lack-luster scrimmage, with WRs and TEs dropping “a bunch” of passes
  • Pretty ugly overall on offensive side, according to Spurrier
  • QB Connor Shaw was 3 of 5 for 33 yards with one TD and one INT
  • QB Dylan Thompson was 9 of 17 for 52 yards and one TD
  • WR Shaq Roland had two catches for 45 yards and one TD
  • RB Mike Davis added 17 yards rushing and two receptions for 32 yards and TD
  • WR Bruce Ellington had a nine-yard TD reception from Shaw

Tennessee – Media Day

  • Saturday was media day for the Vols
  • Derek Dooley reflected on Friday’s scrimmage: players were inexperienced in running a particular type of coverage; communication problems in two-minute situations; and just getting beat on a well-executed offensive plays.
  • 13 days left to fix the breakdowns before NC State

Texas A&M – Scrimmage

  • Johnny Manziel looked comfortable during scrimmage after being named starter
  • He led the Aggies to start the scrimmage on a 14-play, 66-yard drive that ended on a missed field goal
  • Manziel finished 6 of 10 for 51 yards with one INT
  • Freshman Trey Williams broke off a 56-yard run to the 2-yard line but was caught from behind
  • Williams totaled 93 yards on nine carries
  • Defense forced two turnovers
  • RB Christine Michael did not play, and WR Ryan Swope did not play much, as he caught only one pass
  • Oklahoma State transfer RB Brandon Williams should know this week whether the NCAA will allow him to play this year or not
