Vanderbilt’s James Franklin reportedly a hot name among multiple NFL teams

NCAA Football: Vanderbilt at Florida

Vanderbilt’s James Franklin has been mentioned for just about every big-time job opening in college football. Now, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport is reporting Franklin’s name is gaining steam among multiple teams in the National Football League.

Franklin was mentioned in connection with the Southern Cal job before Steve Sarkisian left Washington. He is also mentioned as an upper level candidate for Texas, and even Penn State could pursue Franklin, assuming Bill O’Brien takes the Houston Texans job.

I’ve maintained that Franklin would stay at Vanderbilt until the right job came along. But what would the right job be? Glad you asked. Any college program that is a bona fide national championship contender; he wouldn’t just leave for any job. Now, if the NFL came calling, that’s a totally different situation entirely.

  • Franklin is actually too smart to coach in the NFL where it’s a daily bon fire of the egos. Franklin is very close to his best assignment right now.
