Former Alabama athletic director Mal Moore died today at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, according to the university. Moore was 73.
Moore recently stepped down as athletic director and was replaced by Bill Battle. He had been hospitalized and was battling pulmonary problems for nearly a month.
Battle said Tuesday that Moore needed a lung transplant on WJOX 94.5 FM in Birmingham.
Moore both played and coached at Alabama, spending nearly six decades with the Tide and combined for 10 football national championships during his career. He means more to Alabama athletics than most will ever realize.
Moore’s health was said to have taken a downturn the last few days.
From all of us at SDS, we send our condolences to his family and closest friends.
