SEC Heisman watch: Week 1

Each week on SDS, we’ll recap the previous week for all legitimate SEC Heisman candidates.

This week’s projections are based largely off preseason projections.

Let’s roll for week 1:

1. Todd Gurley, RB, Georgia
Last week’s stats: 12 carries, 154 yards, 2 TDs
Buzz: Gurley was the best player on the field, no matter the ink that Tajh Boyd and Sammy Watkins get. If Gurley can stay healthy, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be in New York, unless Georgia completely falls off the map.

2. Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M
Last week’s stats: 6 of 8 for 94 yards, 3 TDs; 19 yards rushing
Buzz: Manziel only played one half, but he threw three TDs against Rice. Expect big numbers this week against Sam Houston State.

3. Aaron Murray, QB, Georgia
Last week’s stats: 20 of 29 for 323 yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT
Buzz: All hope isn’t lost for Murray, but Georgia has to keep winning for Murray to be in the Heisman spotlight.

4. AJ McCarron, QB, Alabama
Last week’s stats: 10 of 23 for 110 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
Buzz: McCarron looked rattled because of the forgettable O-line play, and Alabama will have to make an undefeated run, with McCarron having a monster SEC Championship, in order to win this award.

5. Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina
Last week’s stats: 3 tackles, 0 sacks
Buzz: One of the bigger head scratcher was Clowney’s inability to make a major impact. UNC did a great job scheming against him. Can Georgia effectively orchestrate that? It sure worked.

6. TJ Yeldon, RB, Alabama
Last week’s stats: 17 carries, 75 yards, 1 TD
Buzz: Yeldon only amassed 17 carries for 75 yards and one TD in a win over Virginia Tech, and like McCarron, Yeldon struggled to find any running room.
