Here’s a look at the national scene on the Heisman Trophy through seven weeks, via Heisman Pundit.

1. Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon
2. Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M
3. Jameis Winston, QB, FSU
4. Sean Mannion, QB, Oregon State
5. Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson
5. Bryce Petty, QB, Baylor
5. Duke Johnson, RB, Miami
8. Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville

Here’s a specific look at the SEC:

Stands alone

1. Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M
Last week’s stats: 470 yards, 2 TDs
Season stats: 2,273 total yards, 19 TDs, 5 INTs
Buzz: Did Manziel have a Heisman moment this weekend? Are you not entertained? He combined for 470 yards and two TDs in the Aggies’ come-from-behind road victory over the Rebels. Still, Oregon’s Marcus Mariota jumped him in the national scene.

In the top four

2. Mike Davis, RB, South Carolina
Last week’s stats: 19 carries, 128 yards, 1 TD
Season stats: 111 carries, 742 yards, 9 TDs
Buzz: Davis has launched himself into the Heisman talk by running angrily and dragging ball carriers. He’s the workhorse of the SEC, and he’s second in total carries and yards in the SEC. If South Carolina makes a legitimate run to Atlanta, look out, because Davis will be leading this offense.

3. AJ McCarron, QB, Alabama
Last week’s stats: 21 of 35 for 359 yards, 1 TD
Season stats: 111 of 161, 1,407 yards, 11 TDs, 3 INTs
Buzz: McCarron methodically moved the Tide’s offense up and down the field against Kentucky, throwing for a career-high 359 yards. The offense looks to be gelling and improving at just the right time.

4. Aaron Murray, QB, Georgia
Last week’s stats: 25 of 45, 290 yards, 3 TDs, 2 INTs
Season stats: 123 of 196, 1,824 yards, 17 TDs, 5 INTs
Buzz: Murray and the Bulldogs lost to Missouri at home, and it was clear the offense missed RB Todd Gurley and WRs Justin Scott-Wesley and Michael Bennett, but Murray’s hopes took a hit. Basically, Georgia will have to win out, including the SEC Championship, for Murray to be in serious consideration moving forward. But he’s still had a fabulous season.

Still in it

5. Zach Mettenberger, QB, LSU
Last week’s stats: 9 of 17, 152 yards
Season stats: 116 of 174, 1,890 yards, 15 TDs, 2 INTs
Buzz: LSU could be getting ready to go on a run, and if Mettenberger keeps up his strong play, he may have a say-so in this award. But the Tigers will have to beat Alabama and win the West.

  • Johnny Manziel put up 0 passing touchdowns and 2 turnovers against an absolutely decimated Ole Miss defense. Notice that you didn’t list how many turnovers he has had this season, but you’ll put up AJ’s impressive 3.

    • That’s what Johnny does to defenses…decimates them.

    • And if you’re trying to say the only reason he put up numbers is because your defense is hurt, then, um, you missed the point. That’s why he’s so good. Minimize impact throwing, and he throttles you in the running game.
