It became official today – South Carolina and North Carolina will open the 2015 season in Charlotte at Bank of America Stadium, home of the Carolina Panthers.
South Carolina won the coin toss and elected to be the home team for the matchup. According to organizers, the hope is for the two teams to hook back up in Charlotte in 2019, when UNC will be the home team.
“We are extremely excited to bring these national football powers and regional rivals together in Charlotte for college football,” said Will Webb, Executive Director of the Charlotte Sports Foundation. “Both North Carolina and South Carolina have a strong alumni presence in the region. This will be a tremendous game featuring a marquee matchup of ACC and SEC teams. We look forward to hosting the Tar Heel and Gamecock teams and fans in Charlotte.”
Each school will reportedly get 12,500 tickets each.
These two teams open the 2013 season in Columbia.
Since South Carolina is the home team in 2015, the SEC Network, which starts in 2014, may have a particular interest in this opening game. After all, it will be interesting to see how the network handles premier non-conference games in which the SEC program is the home team.
