12 from SEC named Sporting News’ preseason first-team All-Americans

It’s officially August, and college football kicks off in less than a month.

Well respected publisher Sporting News released its first-team All-American list today, and it is littered with SEC greats.

Check out their excellent analysis on why they were chosen here.

Here is how the first-team shakes out, with SEC players bolded:

Offense (5)
QB Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M
RB TJ Yeldon, Alabama
RB Todd Gurley, Georgia
WR Marqise Lee, USC
WR Amari Cooper, Alabama
TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Washington
OL David Yankey, Stanford
OL Taylor Lewan, Michigan
OL Cyril Richardson, Baylor
OL Anthony Steen, Alabama

Defense (5)
DE Jadeveon Clowney, South Carolina
DT Will Sutton, Arizona State
DT Anthony Johnson, LSU
DE Stephon Tuitt, Notre Dame
LB CJ Mosley, Alabama
LB Anthony Barr, UCLA
LB Kyle Van Noy, BYU
CB Brandley Roby, Ohio State
CB Loucheiz Purifoy, Florida
S Ed Reynolds, Stanford
S HaHa Clinton-Dix, Alabama

Specialist (2)
P Kyle Christy, Florida
PR Marcus Murphy, Missouri
KR Dri Archer, Kent State
AP De’Anthony Thomas, Oregon

My (hot sports) take:

  • I would have not included Anthony Steen, but I would have included Jake Matthews, Cyrus Kouandjio and Antonio Richardson on the first-team. All three are premier tackles in the country.
  • Many are high on Loucheiz Purifoy, and while I think he’s an excellent athlete, I’m not sure he has All-American potential at just corner. All-purpose? I can get there with him playing corner, receiver and special teams. But I’m not convinced Loucheiz Purifoy is even the best corner on his team.
