Athlon ranks the SEC football schedules for 2014

Leading up to the season, strength of schedule is always a popular conversation. Until we have actual data evidence on how strength of schedule will affect teams’ chances with the College Football Playoff, the impact will remain uncertain.

Here’s a look how Athlon Sports say the SEC’s schedules stack up:

RELATED: See how it compares to SDS’ schedule rankings

1. Tennessee Volunteers
2. Arkansas Razorbacks
3. Auburn Tigers
4. Kentucky Wildcats
5. Florida Gators
6. Texas A&M Aggies
7. Ole Miss Rebels
8. LSU Tigers
9. South Carolina Gamecocks
10. Georgia Bulldogs
11. Mississippi State Bulldogs
12. Alabama Crimson Tide
13. Vanderbilt Commodores
14. Missouri Tigers

Like Athlon, I, too, think Tennessee has the conference’s toughest schedule, with Arkansas right behind them. The Vols play the league’s toughest non-conference schedule. We also agree on the conference’s four easiest schedules in Missouri, Vanderbilt, Alabama and Mississippi State.

The wildcard schedule is Florida. The Gators play some really tough teams in Alabama, LSU, Missouri, Georgia, South Carolina and Florida State, but they also play Idaho, Eastern Michigan and Eastern Kentucky. SDS ranked the Gators’ schedule the third toughest, compared to Athlon’s fifth toughest.

Lets face it, there are many small schools who will no longer get the big paycheck they have grown accustomed to getting.
