Bret Bielema dipped down into Texas to complete his coaching staff. Clay Jennings was hired to fill Taver Johnson’s void as the Hogs’ new defensive backs coach.
“I’m thrilled to add Clay Jennings to our staff as his experience blends well with our defensive coaches’ philosophy and terminology,” Coach Bielema said in a release. “He was an instrumental part of a defensive unit at TCU known for giving an opposing offense a variety of looks while keeping schemes simple for their own players. In addition, his knowledge of the recruiting landscape in Texas will be a great benefit to our program.”
The secondary is one area Arkansas must improve, and new defensive coordinator Robb Smith will also coach the secondary. But more than a secondary coach, Arkansas is targeting the state of Texas for recruiting. Bielema knows the Hogs have to make in-roads into the talent-rich state, and Jennings should help them do just that.
Jennings has coached at TCU since 2008, and he played defensive line at North Texas from 1992-95. He’ll make $320,000 annually.
