The coaching carousel is in full swing, and it’s picking up speed.
Gus Malzahn and James Franklin are hot names among the coaching ranks. Both were mentioned as candidates for the Texas job earlier. Malzahn to Texas has died down, but Franklin’s name has been thrown around for several big jobs, including Texas and Penn State. Now, the Cleveland Browns want to interview both Malzahn and Franklin, according to CBSSports.com.
The Browns are one of the most – and maybe the most – dysfunctional NFL organizations, and they recently fired their first-year head coach Rob Chudzinski. They reportedly have interviews set up already with Falcons’ DC Dan Quinn, Patriots’ OC Josh McDaniels and Cardinals’ DC Todd Bowles.
Malzahn can partially thank Chip Kelly’s successful first season – along with Auburn’s turnaround – as to why NFL teams would be interested in the offensive wizard, while Franklin has turned Vanderbilt’s program around, and they continue rewriting the record book.
Malzahn has denied interest in Texas multiple times, and he has expressed that he loves Auburn and that’s where he wants to be. Franklin is a surefire top candidate for several college jobs, too. But I’m not sure either would even want to pursue a head job with the Browns’ organization with what a dumpster fire it seems to be.
Gus Malzahn (Auburn) very much a top candidate for CLE. Vandy’s James Franklin in the mix. One of them or McDaniels expected to get that job
