Texas A&M senior QB Matt Joeckel will transfer

NCAA Football: Rice at Texas A&M

Early enrollee Kyle Allen just had the door open even wider.

Texas A&M senior quarterback Matt Joeckel will transfer, according to a release by the university. Joeckel was Johnny Manziel’s primary backup last year and even started the first game of the year against Rice due to Manziel’s first-half suspension. Since he’s already graduated, Joeckel will be eligible to play at any FBS immediately in 2014.

Joeckel battled Kyle Allen and Kenny Hill throughout the spring for the right to be named the starter. However, it looks like Texas A&M told Joeckel they would go ‘young’ with either Hill or Allen. Whether Hill or Allen would have been named the starter, Joeckel would have been the insurance policy, something they don’t have now.

So, it’s either going to be Allen or Hill to start the first game of the season in 2014, and my money is on Allen, as Hill was suspended to end spring practice because of an offseason arrest.

  • another somewhat surprising development

  • Can’t blame him a bit; he was always going to be behind Hill and Allen. Great kid, has everything in the world but the talent as a QB to be in this rotation. He’ll play significant time, if not start at smaller school.
Hill most likely will start (if his passing out in the planter penalty doesn’t get blown up). Really would like to see Allen redshirt for a year but probably won’t happen w/o Joeckel as 3rd.
