Mel Kiper has 10 SEC players projected as first-round picks

NFL: NFL Draft

Nine players are in serious consideration of being the Houston Texans’ first pick, and four of those are SEC players in Jadeveon Clowney, Johnny Manziel, Jake Matthews and Greg Robinson. Several point to Houston either selecting UCF QB Blake Bortles or Buffalo LB Khalil Mack.

ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper has 10 SEC players being selected in the first round, and Auburn’s Greg Robinson will headline the group as the No. 2 overall pick to the St. Louis Rams:

2. Greg Robinson, OT, Auburn (St. Louis Rams)
3. Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina (Jacksonville Jaguars)
6. Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M (Atlanta Falcons)
8. Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M (Minnesota Vikings)
10. Mike Evans, WR, Texas A&M (Detroit Lions)
13. Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, S, Alabama (St. Louis Rams)
18. Odell Beckham, WR, LSU (New York Jets)
21. CJ Mosley, LB, Alabama (Green Bay Packers)
27. Dee Ford, DE, Auburn (New Orleans Saints)
28. Cyrus Kouandjio, OT, Alabama (Carolina Panthers)

Other players such as Missouri’s Kony Ealy and Florida’s Marcus Roberson have both been projected as first-round picks in other post-combine mock drafts.

The NFL Draft starts Thursday, May 8.

  • From a Missouri follower, I hope Mathews gets a quarterback who will show what a magnificent receiver he is. I hope Manziel goes to team that uses an attack made for his creativity and quickness, what an entertaining player he is, college football’s loss should be the NFL’s gain. I hope Clowney gets challenged 1v1 every week because if he does and he can react with the same success he had in college, it will be an NFL Films title.
Finally I hope Henry Josey and Kony Ealy from Missouri will finally get the credit they deserve. Josey is not just another quick and fast back. His success comes from his heart and from his deep Faith. Ealy and Sam might have to find slightly different roles to assume but they are so athletic, if we don’t get to see them every Sunday it will be a loss to everyone who loves football. The comparison I want to make is Chase Daniel, who after 10 years watching, still goes into the game in the second half and pulls out a victory for his team, but still has to sit and watch someone else get the starting job. Punt the Chiefs Chase, go somewhere where they have a good pass blocking offensive line and light up the NFL scoreboard for us.

    • Daniel last played for Mizzou in the 2008 season, hardly 10 years in the NFL, more like 5. He just signed a 3 year contract with KC and 2 years left. Ealy will be a 1st round pick, Kiper has very little credibility left with his picks.
