Stanford’s Derek Mason will become Vanderbilt’s new head coach, as first reported by 247Sports.com.

Mason was formally the associate head coach and defensive coordinator of the Cardinal, and he’s been with Stanford since 2010. Mason has been an assistant coach dating back to 1994, and he’s had both NFL and college coaching experience and is ready to become a head coach.

Prior to hiring James Franklin, Vanderbilt AD David Williams targeted Gus Malzahn, and then he settled on Franklin after Malzahn turned the opportunity down. Williams targeted Mason from the get-go, and it came down to Mason and Clemson OC Chad Morris, with Mason getting the nod. So, Williams has been solid at identifying great candidates for the job.

Vanderbilt officials are now confirming the hire, and it was the best hire the Commodores could have made.

  1. Don’t know much about him but having coached the Cardinal the past few years and knowing their success sounds like Vandy could be making another great hire. Hopefully he’ll be able to keep the momentum Franklin had going. I’ve enjoyed seeing Vandy become competitive

  2. He’s a solid hire. Stanford’s D has been exceptional the last few years. He has similar charisma that Franklin had. Should be a good fit with the fans and players alike.

  3. As much as I don’t want to see another team in the East that Mizzou could lose, the overall competition and growth at Vandy has been great to watch. Tennessee’s best team????????

  4. Way to nice a guy to make it in the SEC…

You are not devious enough Derek, but good luck
