Following the Miami Hurricanes’ 11-2 campaign in 2003, six of their players — Sean Taylor, Vince Wilfork, Kellen Winslow Jr., Jonathan Vilma, D.J. Williams and Vernon Carey — were selected in first round of the 2004 NFL Draft.

Now, after losing in the national championship game to Clemson earlier this month, the Alabama Crimson Tide have a chance to either match or break that first-round record, according to Pro Football Focus.

PFF has DL Jonathan Allen and LB Reuben Foster listed as locks, but one could make a case that TE O.J. Howard is also a first-round lock. Howard, however, is listed as a “likely” first-rounder, along with DB Marlon Humphrey and LB Tim Williams.

Then, in the “potential” first-rounder category, OT Cam Robinson and LB Ryan Anderson round out Alabama’s class of seven players with a chance of hearing their names called on the first day of the 2017 NFL Draft.

WalterFootball.com and CBSSports.com each have five Alabama players in the first round of their mock drafts, while NFL.com analyst Bucky Brooks has six Crimson Tide stars being selected. Of the three mock drafts, Anderson doesn’t make an appearance in any, so he has the most work to do at the combine to boost his stock.

Still, though, it would appear the Crimson Tide have a great chance to at least match the 2004 Miami record. Williams is the other player who is a borderline first-round selection and isn’t listed in the CBSSports.com mock draft.

However, despite some off-the-field issues this past year, it’s hard to imagine Williams slipping past teams like the Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers and Atlanta Falcons at the end of the first round.

Pass rush is the name of the game in the NFL, so teams are always willing to take a flyer on a guy who has a proven track record of getting after the quarterback.

So, for those keeping track at home, that’s six guys who are near-locks to be selected in the first round of April’s draft. And, with Anderson and other draftable Alabama prospects like DT Dalvin Tomlinson and DB Eddie Jackson having plenty of opportunities to rise up NFL draft boards, it wouldn’t be a complete surprise to see the Crimson Tide snag the first-round record this year.
