TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — With University of Alabama freshman Cam Robinson expected to be out a couple of weeks due to a high ankle sprain, the Crimson Tide went to Plan B when it returned to practice on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior Austin Shepherd was at left tackle during the observation period. Senior Leon Brown, who slid over after Robinson’s injury occurred early in the third quarter at Tennessee last Saturday, was back in his usual spot at right guard. Sophomore Grant Hill was at right tackle.

“It’s football,” Shepherd said. “I’ve done it since I was six years old, so it’s not really any different. I think I’ve played every position ever since I’ve been little so I kind of know a little bit about everything. I mean, it’s pretty much the same thing just opposite so you’ve just got to switch it.”

However, Shepherd has never played left tackle in a game. Alabama is on a bye this week and visits LSU on Nov. 8 (8:30 p.m. ET, CBS).

Junior running back T.J. Yeldon, who did not play during the fourth quarter against the Vols, and senior tight end Brian Vogler (knee, ankle) were both in black no-contact jerseys on the sideline. Yeldon had a boot on his right foot and Vogler sported a brace on his right knee.

“Both guys are just beat up and need a little time,” Saban said. “We’re hoping that they’ll be back and ready to start practicing again on Monday.”

Returning to practice, though, was junior linebacker Denzel Devall, who has missed three games due to an ankle injury. Sophomore linebacker Reuben Foster (shoulder) and senior wide receiver Christion Jones (hamstring) were back in their usual spots after not playing at Neyland Stadium.

Saban also announced that redshirt freshman running back Tyren Jones has been suspended for a violation of team rules. Despite the thinning numbers, though, there are no plans to move anyone to help out the backfield.

“Nudie’s going to play there some,” he said about senior fullback Jalston Fowler. “We still have Altee (Tenpenny) and Derrick Henry, so those are our three backs right now.

“If Tyren Jones does what he’s supposed to, maybe he’ll be back sometime soon.”

Shepherd, a second-year starter at right tackle, sustained a sprained ankle and knee against Texas A&M roughly 10 days ago, but played the entire game at Tennessee. He was being backed up during practice by true freshman Ross Pierschbacher, who coaches still hope to redshirt. Also on the second-unit offensive line junior Dominick Jackson had his left hand wrapped in a club.

“Eight or nine games into the season we’ve all had bruises or bumps I think the bye week is coming at a good time,” Shepherd said. “I think it’s really going to be good in the long run for us.”
