Alabama is losing three senior starters – SEC Defensive Player of the Year Reggie Ragland, Denzel Devall and Dillon Lee – from its linebacking corps in 2015. But Nick Saban and new defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt will have a lot of depth to work with this year.

Here’s a look at how the Crimson Tide’s linebackers are shaping up for 2016:

1. JACK linebackers

Tim Williams should slide into a starting role during his senior season after leading Bama with 12.5 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks as a third-down specialist in 2015. Meanwhile, Christian Miller, who redshirted two years ago and didn’t make a tackle as a reserve last season, is someone who Ragland feels is a name to watch in 2016.

“He’s a great pass rusher just like Tim and Ryan (Anderson),” Ragland told al.com. “They can be really deadly off that edge next year,” Ragland added about this year’s Crimson Tide.

2. SAM linebackers

Rising senior Ryan Anderson, who like Williams was mainly a third-down specialist in 2015, should also step into a starting spot after finishing with 37 tackles – including 6 sacks and 11.5 for loss. His backup could be rising junior Rashaan Evans, a former 5-star prospect who had 10 tackles – including 4 sacks — in 14 games last season.

3. MIKE linebackers

Shaun Dion Hamilton, who rotated in various spots last season, could be the starter here after collecting 27 tackles – 1.5 for loss – as a sophomore. Battling him for snaps will be rising sophomore Keith Holcombe, who like Hamilton saw action in all 15 games last season and finished with nine tackles and one pass breakup.

4. WILL linebackers

This is Reuben Foster’s opportunity to replace Ragland as the leader of Alabama’s defense in 2016. The former 5-star recruit finished second in tackles with 73 as a junior last season; Ragland had a team-leading 102 stops. Foster also added 9 pass breakup.

Ragland thinks Foster is more than ready to ramp up his responsibilities.

“Reuben Foster is going to be Reuben Foster,” Ragland told al.com. “I don’t want nobody trying to be me or any of the past guys. I want them to come in and make their own name, make their own style because I knew I had to step in when it was my time to play, and I know those guys will step up. I know Reuben is going to lead that team.”

5. The recruits

As if those returnees weren’t enough, Alabama scored on National Signing Day by reeling two more linebackers who might ready to contribute right away.

Ben Davis, the top-rated inside linebacker prospect in the country, according to 247Sports, is a highly skilled, 6-foot-3, 240-pounder. Joining him is Lyndell Wilson, a 6-2, 220-pounder who is also the nation’s No. 2 outside linebacker prospect.

You get the feeling that’s Pruitt’s practices, at least among linebackers, will be quite competitive this spring and beyond.

And if what Davis told SEC Country last month is true, the Crimson Tide’s defense is already in really good shape.

“(Saban) told me he wants me to come to Alabama,” said Davis, who is the son of Alabama’s all-time leading tackler, Wayne Davis. “He said I’m a smart enough guy to take Reggie Ragland’s spot on the defense with the play-calling and everything. He said I’m going to have to contribute early.”

Meanwhile, Wilson is apparently so skilled, Saban went out of his way to dab with him. For Alabama’s sake, it’s a good thing that Saban is much better at coaching and recruiting than he is at dabbing.
