Burton Burns tenure as Alabama’s running back coach has come to an end, the program announced Thursday.

Burns won’t be leaving the program, however, he’s just transitioning to assistant athletics director for football for the Crimson Tide. Alabama is moving Joe Pannunzio over from tight ends coach to replace Burns as the team’s running back coach.

“We are excited to be able to promote from within to fill our offensive and defensive coordinators positions,” Saban said via an official school statement. “Joe Pannunzio has done a great job in several different roles within our organization. He is an excellent coach who will do a fine job with our running backs.”

Burns had been the running backs coach for 11 seasons in Tuscaloosa. Under his guidance, Mark Ingram and Derrick Henry both won a Heisman Trophy.

“Burton has been a crucial part of our success over the past 11 years and has done an outstanding job with our running backs,” Saban added. “He is an essential member of our staff as he takes on a new challenge as our assistant athletics director for football.”
