TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama is one of four teams that appears to control its own destiny regarding the college football playoff this season, as the inaugural selection committee prepares to announce its initial rankings on Tuesday.

Although no one knows how the committee members will vote, both major polls had the same top four on Sunday.

The Amway Coaches Poll and the Associated Press Poll agreed that the two unbeaten from the power conferences should be at the top, No. 1 Mississippi State and No. 2 Florida State. Alabama was considered the best of the 17 ranked one-loss teams, at No. 3, and Auburn was fourth.

If the BCS computers were still being used Alabama would be in very good position as two have the Crimson Tide at No. 1. Under the previous system both a team’s highest and lowest ranking would be discarded from figuring a team’s computer poll average, but UA would still clearly be in the top four.

• Jeff Sagarin: 1. Alabama, 2. Auburn, 3. Ole Miss, 4. Mississippi State, 5. Georgia.
• Anderson & Hester: Yet to be released.
• Richard Billingsley: 1. Mississippi State, 2. Florida State, 3. Oregon, 4. Alabama, 5. Auburn.
• Colley Matrix: 1. Mississippi State, 2. Auburn, 3. Ole Miss, 4. Florida State, 5. Alabama.
• Kenneth Massey: 1. Alabama, 2. Ole Miss, 3. Mississippi State, 4. Auburn, 5. Florida State.
• Dr. Peter Wolfe: 1. Mississippi State, 2. Auburn, 3. Florida State, 4. Ole Miss, 5. Alabama.

Alabama (7-1 overall, 4-1 SEC) has a bye this week and visits No. 16 LSU (No. 17 coaches) on Nov. 1, and then hosts No. 1 Mississippi State and No. 4 Auburn. LSU is also on a bye this week.

For those wondering about a potential No. 1 vs. 2 matchup, Florida State is at Louisville on Thursday and then hosts Virginia, MSU hosts Arkansas and Tennessee-Martin before the Tuscaloosa trip.

Auburn’s remaining schedule is at Ole Miss, vs. Texas A&M, at Georgia, and vs. Samford before visiting Alabama to close the regular season.
